Bought this as an accessory to help connect a stereo headset to the Laptop where the native headphone jack started dropping one of the two channels. This unit gives me back the stereo audio capability thru a USB Port quite effortlessly and without any loss of fidelity or harmonics. The product seems pretty well-built and sturdy and matches the case color of my laptop so that's all good there too. From technical standpoint it has been working perfectly so far. I wish it were little slimmer in width - I have 2 side by side USB ports and while this one takes up one port but because of its width the adjacent port becomes unusable for another USB device - my only gripe!!!

Both the headphone jack and microphone jack work flawlessly. It's doing great with plug n' play on both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 computers. I use it to at times record from other audio devices through a 3.5 mm extension. And as for the headphone jack, well I only used it about a couple of times just for the heck of it. The audio quality is just the way it would be if it were to connect straight into your PC. So no it's not gonna optimize your sound in case there's anybody trying to escape from buying a $100 sound card. My only beef with the product is how it just doesn't plug in all the way, which explains the USB extension included.

Ever since I upgraded to Windows 10, I have been struggling with the audio output on my Shuttle XPC. I'd fiddle with different driver settings, try thing suggested in the different discussion groups, etc. I spent hours messing with this. All I wanted was simple L/R stereo line out to go to a pair of powered speakers. I managed to get it working for a while, then I unplugged my PC to move it and when I rebooted the sound was gone again. The Control Panel always reports that the speakers are "not plugged in" even though they are.

Yesterday I decided to throw in the towel and order one of these. It arrived today. less than 60 seconds after I plugged it in I had working sound again. To my ears it sounds every bit as good as the fancy line output of the motherboard (when it was working). The key thing is, it works, and it's about as simple as it gets.

I only wish I'd purchased it weeks ago, I'd have more hair on my head and less stress.

I bought this product because my son is quite the little gamer and unfortunately he has a very large touch-screen PC on a desk that's much too small. We are constantly buying new, expensive headphones on a yearly basis for him because all of the ports for headphones (and some of the USB ports) are on the sides of the computer that are smushed up against the desk. So when he attempts to plug headphones in, the cord is smashed and the headphones cords quickly wear out, break, or snap off altogether. Since I'm really attached to my grandmother's desk...we just keep stupidly replacing the headphones. We tired the wireless, but the sound is always laggy and the mics aren't good for gaming.

So I finally realized "why don't I just buy one of these so that he can plug both the mic jack and the earphone jack into the back and we can save ourselves a lot of money on buying new headphones? I wish I'd have thought of this before. There are USB ports on both the back and sides of the PC, so we plugged this into the back and the problem is solved! There was nothing to set up, no annoying software or driver. The computer quickly recognized the "new device" and it was working in seconds. The quality of the item is great. The aluminum stell is sturdy and attractive and the design takes up as little space as possible. The quality of sound and microphone on a variety of sets we have wasn't harmed at all by plugging them into this device rather than directly into the computer. I was very impressed that I couldn't discern a difference or interruption in quality and plan to purchase more of these for the laptops in our home. For now I'll just have to borrow it from my son when he's feeling generous. I have no Cons or complaints about this product...it's a great purchase and works just as I had hoped it would!

I've used this adapter on two different Macs (a Mac mini ca. 2012 and an iMac ca. 2015) and on neither one does the microphone function work. I think this might be a wiring issue and I'm going to test it out using 3.5mm break-out boards which will let me control what signals are wired to the different conductors (tip, ring, ring, and sleeve) on the 3.5mm plug.

On the iMac the headphone function works all the time without fail. On the Mac mini the headphone function eventually stops working and, paradoxically, stops my keyboard from working. Sometimes removing the devices allows the keyboard to recover. Other times I've had to unplug/plug-in the keyboard or even the USB hub it's connected to in order to reset the keyboard and restore it's operation. I've experienced other issues with the keyboard so this interaction may not be the fault of the headphone/microphone adapter on this particular Mac.

Until I do the test with the 3.5mm break-out boards I will not know if the microphone feature works so 3-stars for now.
