Too large for my sink drains due to metal pivot rod

The end piece is 1/2 inch wide, and will not fit in my sinks' drains to reach the U-drain trap and retrieve my gold earring because of the metal pivot rod inside that holds the pop-up stopper. So I'll have to look for something smaller. Still, this looks to be a helpful tool so I'm keeping it to retrieve other items that aren't down a drain. It just didn't help me with what I needed.

We used it to retrieve small toys, crayons, markers, hair ties that a two-year old had joyfully dropped into a large oak floor register that was not removable.
Useful and works as expected.
