More than just a tablet
C. C. EdwardsJanuary 19, 2018
Microsoft advertises this as a notebook replacement. I'm using it as a replacement for the notebook that I was using as a desktop until it finally gave up the ghost.
My Surface is working great for that purpose. If you want to use it as a desktop replacement you will need some accessories most of which I already had.
All of these are available here on Amazon but with one exception I won't make any product recommendations

1: A monitor. I have a 24 inch with a HDMI port.

2: The Surface has a mini Display port so you will need an adapter cable. Here's the exception to my "no product" rule. Microsoft made the mini Display port at an angle. I have read many reviews here on Amazon of people trying to use third party cables and too many are unhappy for my taste so I recommend you spend the extra money and get the official Microsoft adapter cable which works great for me. If you're old school they also make one that connects to VGA.
3: wireless mouse and keyboard for obvious reasons.

4: The Surface has one USB port so if you want to use more than one USB device at a time you need a USB hub

5: Most notebooks come with a DVD burner nowadays. If you need one get a portable USB-connected one.

End of tutorial. I hope someone is helped by my experience. The Surface is a great product but needs a little help if you want to use it as more than a tablet.
Runs alarmingly hot, short battery life, doesn't honor warranty.
A. SmithDecember 29, 2017
I ordered this product approximately seven months ago. As recommended online, I instantly updated the firmware to resolve the short battery life issue.

Even with that, it proved to be too hot to effectively draw on, and the tracking was what I would expect from a three-year-old Huion(no offense, Huion has gotten quite a bit better in the past two years)- the i7 version runs rather hot and it's uncomfortable to work with in that capacity, even with a glove.

Anyway, so in November the machine began to run a bit hotter than usual, but not to overheating levels, and the battery life degraded from approximately ten hours to approximately two hours by the time I made a complaint(I couldn't be without a laptop over finals, so I planned to call it in once those were done). Additionally, over said time, the Surface began to run hot enough that grabbing the back of the case wasn't just mildly uncomfortable, but actually hurt, which would cause minor burns with sustained contact. This is consistent with the known LG battery failure, but it was within warranty due to being a manufacturer defect.

I attempted to make a warranty claim on Christmas Eve, but the battery ran out before I was able to fully run the diagnostics. That shouldn't have been a problem- after all, I still had five months. Instead, when I ran the diagnostics again on December 29, Microsoft began to help me but then told me my warranty was suddenly expired, but those details were not available via the consumer-side warranty page but the business-side one. That's right, Microsoft refused to honor their stated one-year warranty.

Top end surfave pro experience for a fraction of the price.

Stunning device. In my opinion just as good as pro 4 and very good value for money. I have upgraded to the surfave pro 4 due to breaking the screen on this from dropping. Honestly you can get a really top end surface pro experience for a fraction of the cost. even in 2017!
I am in love with my Surface
