Liked the build, 1/4" scale lends itself to lots of detail. NO not a beginners kit.

I bought this kit enjoyed the build, however it's not a beginners kit. The description is very misleading I've been ship modeling for 50+ years, my tool selection is quite extensive, as well as my experience. The planking can be seen from both inside and out, the planking must be cut and shaped very precise or your boat will leak. My recommendation, if you like, one of the river boats. You'll have less frustration which will finish into a model you'll be proud of not a box of wood in the closet. Even these can be intimidating, but a thorough understanding of the instructions, patience and knowing to walk away when you're tired or getting your butt kicked.

Maybe not for your first model but definitely an intermediate project. I loved the clear directions-easy to follow and read as if the guy was sitting beside me as I made it.
