Has its flaws, but okay.

I lost the handset for my Loc8tor Pet, and it was no longer available to purchase, so I bought this. It works at a far greater range than the other product, which is the best thing about it. If there's no substantial obstacle, it beeps when my cat is some 1/4 + mile away in the forest. It's harder to pinpoint direction, though, and can be as much as 20 degrees off either way, which is substantial, but with practice you can learn to narrow it down a bit. The handset is bulkier, and seems to be made of cheaper materials, but the thin, sleek design, black color, and small size of the Loc8tor Pet handset probably contributed to its loss, so the bulkiness and light colors can be an advantage in a way. The 2-piece tag, which slides apart for battery insertion often slides apart a fraction without my help, possibly knocked apart when the cat scratches himself. When this happens, it renders the whole setup useless. It's better than nothing, works most of the time, and is a lot smaller & cheaper than any GPS system I've seen.
Provides peace of mind, but why such a loud beeper?!

Sadly, after four years of reliable cat tracking, I had to replace my Loc8tor when one of the tags stopped working. I was very disappointed to learn that Loc8tor had changed their tags and the reviews of the new version are very bad. I would love to get a GPS tracker for my cats, but could not find one that is designed small enough for a cat and the GPS trackers are still too expensive. The Girafus Pro-track is the closest I can find to the Loc8tor. The tag is a bit larger in size and more visible. The silicon case is open at one end and so I am concerned about water getting to it when the cats are out in the rain (they don't mind a light drizzle and occasionally get caught in sudden downpours, much to their displeasure). The Loc8tor cases completely enclose the tags with the only opening against body. But my cats do not seem to mind the larger size.
I prefer the design of the Girafus tracker in comparison to the Loc8tor tracker. It is larger and easier to hold in the hand, and comes with an attachable strap which makes it easier to handle when out tracking down one's pets and can be hung on a hook when not in use. I also like that it is white rather than black which makes it easier to see.
The beeper is very loud and there is no option to lower the volume -- only on or off. The sound is so obnoxiously loud that I will probably have to use it with the volume off when I have to go out into the neighborhood to track down my cats, which defeats some of the use of the tracker.
I also find that the Girafus tracker is less useful than the Loc8tor for finding my kitties inside the house (napping in a secret spot). It just beeps loudly and flashes the green light no matter which direction I point it -- nor precise enough. With the Loc8tor, I could always figure out where they were. However, the Girafus claims a range hundresds of feet longer than the Loc8tor and so I hope that that feature will come in handy on those rare occasions when one of my kitties wanders further afield than usual (lured by a rabbit or chipmunk).
I think this is a reasonable option to have peace of mind while allowing one's cats to have a healthy, outdoor experience in life. I await technology that will bring GPS tracking more conveniently to cat owners.

UPDATE: Well, after only a couple of weeks, this product became useless. It will no longer track, even if my cat is standing right next to me. I tried a variety of different solutions to get it working, but if will not work. A complete waste of money. I now have to spend another $100 to buy the TabCat tracker and hope that that will work enough to be reliable.
... on a cat collar with a range that's actually useful. This product works very well if you have ...

I was excited to find a product small enough to use on a cat collar with a range that's actually useful. This product works very well if you have a little patience. It takes practice to sync the tags with the base unit. Watch the online video a few times. They are a little finicky, so if you expect them to be perfect you will be disappointed. Sometimes the tags will randomly reset (possibly from cat activity) and you have to sync them again. I bought four tags because my two cats lose their collars sometimes, and this proved very useful because I can just swap in a working tag without having to sync all four again.

In our typical neighborhood with houses, trees, etc. and considerable variation in terrain, I can pick up a signal at least 200 yards in any direction; this is the farthest I've had to look so far. On level ground with fewer obstructions it may well reach the advertised range. It helps to block the base unit with your body when you try to establish direction. It takes a minute to acquire the signal for each tag, but I've found that it does this even if you don't "calibrate" the base unit.

My cats (12 and 17 pounds) don't even seem to notice them. It's worth every penny for peace of mind.
Great Search Tool

We have used this a few times to track down our 3 cats in our neighbors' yards. Definitely gives me peace of mind when there is a big storm coming, it's gotten dark out and they haven't returned, etc. We replace the batteries every few months to be sure they won't go dead when we need them. Definitely Line of Sight tool, so sometimes you have to search from multiple vantage points. Wish we'd had this a few years ago when we lost our first cat. Maybe we could've found her.
Great range, easy to use, tag batteries last only 2-3 months
Allen Stewart✓ Verified PurchaseOctober 12, 2016
I had the Loc8tor before and this unit has FAR better range. The Loc8tor might reach across the street, but with the Girafus I was able to go down the street 3 houses and around the corner behind one and it still worked. The only downside is that the tag batteries only last 2-3 months whereas the Loc8tor tag batteries would last nearly a year. This unit's remote is far more intuative to use than the Loc8tor.
