Shelf system for grown ups
Dennis•September 28, 2017
**Update** December 2017,
So it has been around two months or better that I been using the MCR-B020BL and my thoughts and taste in listening has changed quite a bit. In the past I listened to music loud with this shelf sized system that's just not possible but I'll tell you in this update review you don't need loud decibels to enjoy music. Being this system found it's home in the bedroom I been playing it at soft volume and falling asleep to both radio and CD which both sound fantastic. I live upstate New York and FM radio comes in really clear and strong.
Playing around with the equalizer I set the sound to be stronger in the mid range and bass at soft to moderate listening the system sounds warm and rich and doesn't make me miss any of higher frequencies which I stated in an earlier review would be an issue to my listening taste. Don't let the 4 inch full range speakers fool you there is plenty treble vocals and instruments sound natural and clear. Also the bass is strong at soft and moderate volume which to me is the best way to test a speakers ability to reproduce bass, because the speaker cone isn't moving large volumes of air and still has the ability to sound full and rich. The speakers sound excellent close to the unit and spaced apart, I prefer them spaced apart because you do get better stereo imaging but the wife says differently. Happy wife happy life :)
The Bluetooth is another great feature also. My original review was a 4 star, I'm now changing that to a 5 everyday this system performs well and sounds absolutely beautiful.
Had to part with my four large Yamaha speakers and Polk sub for this micro system.
I can't yet love this system granted it has the added feature of Bluetooth. I haven't found anything not to like about this micro system other than me personally missing the power and sound quality of larger components.
Starting out with the amplifier receiver its got all the features one should need.. Bass mid and treble adjustments clock alarm and sleep function.
Its Yamaha so sound quality is what Yamaha is known for clean and natural sound, the speakers sound good though I am surprised Yamaha went with a full range and didn't use some sort of a coaxial drive unit for better highs.
Bass- respectable for the size of the speaker cabinets not booming or artificial sounding its just right for the system.
Mid range- full range speakers sound good in this area and the driver Yamaha is using does the mid range real good vocals and instruments sound warm and natural.
Treble- its present and plays clear but doesn't shine. I didn't tweak out the treble setting I am sure there's more highs that this full range can dish out and I'll most likely try it at some point.
Overall I'm happy with this micro system. It performs exactly how it was intended to. Can there be a bit more volume yes but perhaps the unit wouldn't sound as clean and natural as it does. The 1 star shy of 5 is for not going the extra mile and designing a high performance coaxial speaker for fuller and more detailed highs. Come on Yamaha I know you can do it.

A great looking, good sounding micro radio/CD player
Milt Jaehnig•July 24, 2016
I needed a compact AM/FM radio with a CD player for a patio room we built. I had considered the overpriced Bose products but was turned away by the price and many reviews. I chose the Yamaha system based upon the many positive Amazon reviews and the Yamaha reputation in audio equipment. My expectations were modest for what I intended for its use; I have a high quality stereo elsewhere in the house so the Yamaha will have only occasional use in the patio room.
I received the order promptly. It was well packaged and the three components were nicely wrapped in foam sheets. Very neat and tidy. Upon unwrapping the two speakers and the main box I was very pleased with the 'lowboy' design and ascetics of the three units side-by-side. It has a very classy, unobtrusive look that first appealed to me when looking online. The physical weight of the speakers and main unit is surprisingly more than one would expect. The manual is well written and clear, after two pages of don't do stupid things with your new product.
Hook up is quick and the remote control intuitive. Although my primary use will be FM followed by CDs and then occasionally AM radio I was quite surprised at the AM sensitivity using the included small loop antenna ( I miss the days gone by when stereo receivers had the ferrite loopstick antenna which drastically improved AM reception). The auto tune-memory feature worked well and programmed more than two dozen FM stations. I found it simpler to use the auto-tune to make the presets and then go back and delete the ones I did not want. I then played a high-quality Mozart CD and was quite surprised at the sound quality. I did not hear any boomy bass that others have reported. The unit has an equalizer function to emphasize bass and treble but I have not played with this yet; the default sound was great as-is.
Overall my first impressions are quite positive and I am very happy to have chosen this Yamaha product at half the price of a Bose wave radio (without CD !!). I can't speak to the longevity of the Yamaha system but I hope it will provide listening pleasure for many years. I highly recommend this product.

A music lovers choice.

Excellent FM reception in a difficult spot. I haven't used AM that much, but it seems fine. The CD player is convenient, and all of the features can be operated remotely. Balancing the bass and treble is no trouble at all. The pictures of the system are not clear, so I was surprised to find both speakers separate from the tuner when I unpacked it. Though I have placed all three units pretty close together, I imagine that putting the speakers further apart would also work well. It is neat and good looking, and fits easily on a bookshelf. Since the controls are placed on top of the unit, it is important to allow at least 6 inches of space above it. It makes sense to buy the adapter that is made to go with it if it will be placed near an electric outlet.
Great Little Bookshelf Stereo

I purchased this Yamaha Micro System for a small home and it works great. I like my music loud most of the time and the volume goes up high enough with just a bit of distortion at the highest volume. Whatever it's playing, I back down the volume if it's too much for the speakers, but it seems pretty capable. I listen to a wide range of music. I'm quite satisfied overall with the performance and sound, but I'm sure the fact that it is in a smaller space helps. My living room/dining room is probably only about 400 square feet with 10' ceilings. I haven't placed the unit yet to optimize the sound, and I'm sure when I do I'll be more impressed. I like the sliding CD opening. I had a Phillips before with a door that opened top to bottom and this opening operation finally failed, so I deliberately chose a unit that slid open instead. The USB port works great. Volume goes up to 53 and produces pretty good volume.
