Perfect multi tool sheath

An excellent way to carry the Leatherman Surge. It fits and carries well.
The tension to hold the tool in place is perfect. The tool can swiftly be deployed if needed.
This is a very good product with outstanding entrepreneurship

This is a very good product with outstanding entrepreneurship. The first time I was aware of a carry solution in this vein it was as a one-off solution that required a metal working shop. The common/free leatherman sheaths aren't very good. This one-finger secure/draw with retention is just better. Not only does this product deliver on that functionality, they have added some important improvements. I bought one for my surge and one for my OHT. After examining those side by side, it is clear they didn't just take the easy way and try to adapt a generic base design to each tool. They clearly started from scratch and tailored the product to each leatherman. This is an uncommon level of engineering in a case where they are the only vendor and they still did things the hard way which makes an infinitely better product. It has positive retention (you can turn it upside down and shake it and it won't fall out, and still be able to remove it with one finger quickly. The fit and finish feels OEM. They also skeletonized the sheath to save weight. The skeletonized holes are hex shaped so you could tighten or remove a bolt using the sheath. This is just good engineering for a more than fair price. It took a few weeks to be delivered but the execution is impeccable and that takes time. Its a clever, well made USA product for a very fair price. The Surge is the pinnacle of multitools and this is a sheath to match.
Just what I needed

It's a friction fit so if you thrust it the tool will come out but on everyday that wont happen. The metal is thin offering a light and small profile but can be bent easily. All and all I'm still very happy.
Love it

Just got this in for my new surge. I bought the 1.5 inch to match the belt I always use. I was a little skeptical of the clip.

I slipped it onto my belt and it actually clicked. It seems pretty strong. The surge fits perfectly and is very minimalist which I really like.

This is a review of the R.A.E Gear metal sheath for the leatherman Surge. There isn't a whole lot to write about so I'll cut right to the chase.....I LOVE this sheath. It's extremely light and has an overall good build quality. The tabs towards the top of the sheath are what actually hold the tool into place and they can easily be manipulated back and forth.

While the Surge does have some weight to it, this sheath prevents the tool from sagging on your belt as will happen with most other sheaths. This helps keep the tool close to your body and most of the time I forget I have it. My Olight R50 Pro Seeker along with Nite-Ize pouch weigh less than my multitool/sheath combo but I definitely feel it more due to it's overall size/girth. Yes, pictured is what I carry on my belt with me to work EVERYDAY.

Although I'm right handed, I do keep my multitool on the left side of my waist and this is soley because if I don't, I'll scratch the center console of my car when I get into it everyday. The only "con" with this sheath is the price and unfortunately for me, I'm not Adam Savage so I can't make my own. At $30 shipped it's a little steep for a basic sheath compared to the price I paid for my Surge and that was $75 brand new.......yes, I got a very good deal on the tool. If you consider that the Surge normally runs for $100 then I'm ahead of the game because the combo cost me a total of $105. Really depends on your perspective.

This is a typical working man's sheath, not for a prepper, camper, zombie hunter, etc. You can't carry extra attachments on the sheath so that will be a limiting factor for some. For most professionals that don't need/want anything but a multitool, this sheath rocks. The speed at which this sheath allows you to remove your multitool might be priceless for some. Keep in mind, you can insert your multitool incorrectly into the sheath and cause a jam so pay attention. Yes, I......um....."tested" that for you.

One final thing of extreme importance, the tool CAN slip out of the sheath under extreme activity. What do I mean? I dunno, something like running full sprint for your life, if you happen to be chasing a thug that robbed his fourth 7/11 through some back alleys parkour style, if you're a circus trapaze artist, etc, etc. A light sprint will be of zero concern though. I am aware that this sheath is marketed to law enforcement/military but after using it, I notice how the tabs that hold the tool in place do open up a tiny bit when constantly removing and putting back your multitool, the tabs aren't as strong/spring-y as the spring steel used for the belt attachment and perhaps that could be a future upgrade?? If you have the possible option of trying the sheath out in person then perhaps you can come to your own conclusion. This is not a concern in my case.
