I cleaned my grids with a cotton ball soaked in alcohol, and they stuck on just fine. I read other reviews where people had trouble with them not sticking. Not me! They look fine. A lot better than what I had before. We have a drop ceiling in our lower level powder room. I have to keep it because it's the only way to get to some of the plumbing in our house. I covered the ugly acoustic panels in a painted textured wallpaper, and added the strips. My ceiling looks much better now!
