Looses suction/draw when top of pump is above water line

Used it for first time. It's not fast but works fine. It stops siphoning when the top of the pump reaches air, but was able to get the 'draw' of water again by placing my finger over the three holes on top. Doesn't make sense why it works that way.

It works great. It does what I need it to do. I would like it to automatically tune off so I would not have to worry about leaving it, but It pumps out quickly so I dont have to wait long. Thank you

Didn't work, suctioned water for a few mins then shut off. Repeated over and over. A shame.
