Cracks and Bubbles in my stones
Bakergirl✓ Verified Purchase•March 15, 2018
These stones had so many good reviews that I thought I couldn't go wrong when I ordered them. When I received them, they were well packaged, and except for a few irregularities on the surface, they looked pretty good. I have been making sauerkraut in my German made 5 liter fermenting crock for about 2 years now. Over that time period, I have never subjected the glass stones to any heat, except warm water when I wash them, and I have never dropped them. I am able to take them in and out of my crock, which is very easy since the opening of the crock is quite large. All 4 of the stones have developed cracks and bubbles in the interior of the stone, and I am concerned about glass chipping off, based on other reviews. I will be replacing these stones, and do not recommend them.
IF YOU WANT GLASS SHARDS IN YOUR FOOD

DANGEROUS! Stay away from this product. Very poor manufacturing (bubbles, irregularities in the glass) AND DANGEROUS!!
Some stones are so poorly molded that the glass forms a very thin edge on the top that breaks when using, leaving tiny shards of glass in your food!
HAZARDOUS ITEM.

These glass weights are very heavy which is great but it is extremely hard to get them out of the jar. I needed to get one out and there was no way to. I'm.just having to leave it in the ferment until it's done and hope it doesn't break my jar when I try to make it drop out. My bad for buying weights with no 'handle' part for removal
Total waste of money for an expensive product that doesn't work.

Thick glass weights

These are cool glass weights, and are nice for what they are. They're not extremely wide, though (so they won't break your jar or anything). Mine tilt easily in the jar, and some stuff floated past them to the top. One thing to remedy that might be to put a big leaf over the mixture directly under the weight. The weight would hold the leaf down (so the leaf would ferment) and the leaf would hold everything else down"”I haven't tried it yet, though. Or, you could just make sure your pickles are not a proper shape for floating past a tilted fermentation weight. Or, maybe you know how to ensure that the weight doesn't eventually tilt. Maybe if it had some prongs or something to keep it steady by anchoring them in the pickles, it might not tilt.
The weights are thick and heavy. They definitely seem to hold down what the stuff so you can't tell if it would be floating or sinking.

look better. They also don't hold all the veg down

So I ordered a few sets of these..they are as promised. However, for me, I'd probably just use a leaf of cabbage from now on, as opposed to these stones. They attract a build up of cloudiness, whereas the jars I use the cabbage leaves, look better. They also don't hold all the veg down, it floats up on top of the stones. Good idea, but not one that I'll continue using.
