Best dang meat i ever had
eric frank✓ Verified PurchaseJune 16, 2017
First off.. you do NOT need facebook. Dont listen to people.. You create an account through them that links your sous vide to the internet so you can access from anywhere. They ask for no private info. I used a cooler, filled with water, put sous vide in.. started the preheat and left for the pool. Got a message saying "water ready".. went home, added 4 Tbones and 6 burgers.. set timer for one hour and thirty minutes and went back to pool. Phone said "food done".. went back to my house amd removed meat and seasoned/seared it. Best dang meat i ever had. And if i didnt mention this, pool is a community pool away from my house.. sous vide worked great over wifi.
Best thing ever for chicken breast

I could not cook chicken breast if it killed me. It always came out kind of dry even though I cooked to 165. I cook the chicken with the Anova for 3-4 hours at 140, then sear it on a griddle or my grill and it's amazing. Very juicy and tender. The machine is worth it just for chicken breast alone.
Something that actually is "new and improved"!

When my first generation Anova device stopped working because of a bad touchscreen, I didn't hesitate on buying the new version. And so far (after six months) this device fixes all the problems of the old one, but keeps the great functionality of previous versions.

First off, they removed the touchscreen, a decision which I very much appreciate. There's no reason for a sous vide device to have a touchscreen. This one has two controls: the temperature set wheel and a start/stop button. And that's all it needs! I like it much better without all the frivolous options of the touchscreen.

Now, this one does have Bluetooth connectivity (but no wi-fi, like some other models). I personally haven't ever used it; I don't think it's necessary. You're already standing right there when you put your food in the water, and you never need to change the temperature mid-cook, so why not just set the temperature and start the cook while you're there? To me, that's much simpler. Of course, however, having Bluetooth functionality doesn't take anything away from the simple controls on the unit itself.

As for performance, it seems to heat the water slightly faster than the old unit. There does seem to be a big difference between heating one gallon and two gallons of water, so you will want a relatively small bucket to use it in. I've checked the water temperature a few times with kitchen thermometers and that temperature reading has always matched exactly with the temperature on this unit.

Overall, I'm way past the point where I would consider cooking my meat without sous vide, and this device works great for a reasonable price.
I know how to grill a steak that comes out pretty damned good
Auldphart✓ Verified PurchaseJune 5, 2017
So far the sous vide thing is overrated at my house. Having survived over five decades, I know how to grill a steak that comes out pretty damned good. But this little guy takes all the guess work out of the process and it does exactly what it needs to do. A couple of top shelf NY strips were the first victims in the not-quite-boiling bath and they were nice, but I didn't fall to my knees since they weren't any different than anything I'd made for the last decade. I also did a tri-tip with this and it was yummy but not any different than I'd have done without it. I guess the main benefit is to get it cooked and held to the point that allows you to do other cooking -- it's not a time saver but it does help you be more efficient with your cooking if you do this kind of thing often. It flawlessly handles your meat and that's a phrase I've never typed or even said.
I'm actually excited about cooking
Coal cracker✓ Verified PurchaseJune 4, 2017
I'm not into cooking. I enjoy grilling hot dogs hamburgers and steaks but that's about it. I've used the sous vide once so far and am excited about its potential. What I really like is that you know the food will be cooked but not over done. I always err on side of overcooking to reduce risk of illness. I'm excited to cook chicken now which I never liked grilling before for that reason.

I also like the idea of cooking a steak to medium and then searing on grill for nice crust.
