I bought this so I could dual boot a different version of OSX on my macbook without needing to take apart a bunch of stuff to install a data doubler. This enclosure definitely works great for that, as long as you have realistic expectations about running something like this over USB 2 speeds! But this enclosure isn't the most durable thing, you should definitely buy something more durable if you need to take your drive to work or school every day.

A few issues did warrant docking a star though...if you are going to buy this, you definitely need rubber feet to put on the bottom! The cover can also be hard to get off, and you'll probably want a small nylon pry tool if you plan on swapping drives often since it's pretty hard to get the drive back out without it.

This is a pretty neat enclosure - the transparent plastic shell is certainly unique compared to most other enclosures and is great for geeks who like to see what's inside. The installation process is tool-less, as advertised - simply slide back the top cover and pop in a 2.5" disk. It remains to be seen how well the cover stays on in the long term.

The included cable is junk - not only is it short, it didn't seem to deliver enough power to keep my old Seagate Momentus 7200.4 drive powered on reliably. The same drive-enclosure combination works flawlessly with my AmazonBasics USB 3.0 cable, however.

Chipset / Performance: This particular enclosure uses a Norelsys NS1068X, a modern USB 3.0-SATA bridge chip that supports UASP. I was able to max out the performance of the aforementioned Seagate Momentus 7200.4 drive, although that's not saying much since it's a old (circa-2009), slow disk to begin with. Everything works well for me on Windows 10, although from what I've read the NS1068X can potentially be problematic on Linux platforms when using UASP.

Overall, this is a decent product - the enclosure itself is excellent in terms of both looks and performance, let down only by the subpar USB 3.0 cable included with it.

Works well for HDDs but I have trouble connecting via USB 3 when hosting a Sandisk SSD, have yet to find why. It is not the cable, must be some incompatibility with this particular SSD. (I keep having have problems with several Sandisk products, will never buy their products again.)
The case is a little hard to open and close though, and since the transparent plastic is more fragile then the usual materials, this means you have to be extra careful when (dis)assembling new disks. Took the 5th star for that, I own other Orico cases and they do not have this flawn.

I bought this to get the data off of an old hard drive and then use it as an external. It looks great, and the fact that you can SEE the physical hard drive in the case is a god send. I didn't realize how much I wanted this feature until I got this! Firstly, if I need the specs or any information about the drive I don't have to crack the case open to see the model number, revision, etc. etc. Also, I can use several of the same cases for different hard drives and can easily tell them apart at a glance! That being said, if you want to use several of these cases with identical hard drives you're on your own, lol!

All that being said, the fit for my SSD was very tight, so if you're planning on constantly swapping drives this may not be for you. When you slide a drive in it flexes the connectors on the case a little bit, and taking it out flexed them even more, but nothing broke and a regular WD Blue HDD fit in perfectly snug.

It also seems as though the USB-C version performs better than the micro-USB version. Didn't benchmark it though, so take that with a grain of salt.

This product is beautifully made, and has excellent functionality! I snapped my 1TB spinning hard drive into the enclosure in under a minute, plugged it in using the supplied cable, and was up and running immediately. I particularly like the two independent status lights, one blue for power to the drive, one red when the drive is accessed. It is truly "tooless", and I also like the transparency so I can see what's inside the enclosure without opening it or hooking it up. Got to me in 2 days, Prime, free shipping. Perfect.
