We haven't tried it closed yet but so far, when open, it's my cats go-to hideaway.

This carrier is supplied with straps for nearly any carrying scenario you can imagine. This is a well-made and thoughtful product. Our cat loves it so far! It's important to follow the training instructions for getting your pet, especially a cat, acclimated to the thing. I would recommend at least a month or so before taking your cat "on the road."
Since our little guy is still in the "training period," I haven't used the backpack feature yet. It's worth noting, however, that this is a pet carrier first. That is, it's not made for YOU. The backpack straps look just fine for their purpose, but it doesn't seem like the carrier is going to feel like something you'd carry into the woods for two weeks. I think this is the right choice from the manufacturer. The pet, after all, is the one who has to like it!
I've seen some other carriers that look more like backpacks -- the kind with bubble windows, etc. These seem like they'd appeal to the owner first -- displaying the pet -- but they lack the room for the pet to lie down. I haven't used one, so I can't be sure.
I can say that this carrier was an instant hit with our cat. The fact that there is a door on either end is important -- our cat was able to crawl all the way THROUGH it initially, and this helps with exploring. I would call our cat medium-large -- 12.2 pounds -- and he's comfy in the size small. He's able to turn around and to stick his head out the top window, too. See picture -- when he's lying down, he pretty much fills the floor, which is fine for a cat as it makes him feel secure.
Our intention is to take him outside, and once we've tried that I'll try to remember to add to this post.

I got this bag to take my blind dog on a hike. He's a medium sized terrier mix (25lbs). I had a hard time finding a bag that he would fit into. This bag was perfect. He had pleanty of room in it and sat comfortably the whole hike.

My dog is older and I'm always looking for new ways to transport him because he goes with me everywhere. He has a stroller and an airplane carrier. This bag caught my attention because I wanted something that would allow me to carry him on my back or front when we are going to public events and not have to deal with the stroller. He loves it and is very comfortable with it. I like the fact that I can keep it open so his head can be out to socialize with others. Very comfortable for me and very workable. He is 16 pounds and this size (I think medium) is perfect. I wish I could lower it when I'm carrying him in front, but the versatility of the other handles/straps makes it workable.

Product delivered as described, thank you! Upon initial inspection, the carrier appears well made and plenty spacious for our 5mth old rescue puppy (Corgi/Doxie mix). To assist others, please know we purchased the large carrier for our puppy that weighs 13 lbs and is approx 22 inches in length, head to tail. He has plenty of room to turn around and he fits comfortably. We are looking forward to using it here soon and will post a followup.

We have since used the carrier and we can attest to the fact this is a well made, thought out, product. Our puppy loved it!
