What's with this plastic piece???
Linda Logan•December 19, 2017
I have only used a french press within the last few months. In staying with friends, the one they had was very simple, but I decided to order this one. How different could they be?? Well this 'Best French Press" has been terrible! The plastic cup under the lid has never been attached. In reading the reviews I realize that maybe that was my problem with this one too. I can hardly get the coffee out, but then it comes out in a rush and a mess! I've been wondering what the heck this piece of plastic was for anyway? I would try to push it down by itself after pressing the lid down with the plunger. I do not like this french press! Way too much work for a cup of coffee! What a disappointment this french press has been!

It works well enough but is not easy to take apart and put back together completely for cleaning. Seems designed by engineers rather than users. Hard to explain why, but the piece that holds the strainer assembly to the plunger shaft is threaded on both ends, and there is no easy way to grasp it to loosen/tighten it. It is difficult to tighten one side without loosening the other side.
Lid needs to be one piece

The item looks quality and finished out of the package, brews fine and the strainer is great, however it turns out that it is a pain to clean properly. The plastic piece on the inside of the lid usually gets liquid stuck under it which means you have to unscrew the pieces (which is a pain) to clean to avoid mold and smells. If the lid was made of a solid piece this could be avoided.
Exactly what I wanted.

I use it for conventional hot coffee, and also for "cold brew," which is less acidic. (For those who haven't tried this, you put double or triple the usual amount of coffee, then use cold water to fill. Leave the carafe on the counter for 6-7 hours, or overnight in the refrigerator, then press. The resulting brew is a concentrate that you mix with boiling water to the strength desired, It is also delicious in iced coffee drinks. The concentrate will keep in the refrigerator for 2-3 weeks,)
Wasted 4 scoops of real Hawaiian Kona coffee

I followed the directions exactly. I heated the water for the coffee (not even to a boil), primed the French press with warm water, dumped out the warm water, added the coffee grounds, added the hot water (after it sat for a minute), stirred, and let it brew for 5 minutes. When I came back to the kitchen, there was coffee and coffee grounds leaking through the cracked glass onto my counter.
I received this French press about 5 weeks ago, and I've used it less than 10 times. It was only $13, so I didn't have high expectations, but this is unacceptable.
