Key features

  • HANDMADE IN GERMANY The American inspired Hinterland double bit axe is a capable, highly effective cutting axe, suited as a large timber felling axe. If inclined, the user is able to profile each blade differently and may use, for instance, one edge for splitting and the other for cutting. Traditionally, one bit was used for heavy work that was prone to dull the blade, while the other was kept with a finely honed edge
  • C50 HIGH CARBON STEEL - 53-56 HRC The hand forged axe head is crafted using a drop hammer on open dies with premium grade C50 high carbon steel, this hand forged axe is individually handmade by experienced blacksmiths with a traditional finish and polished cutting surface that improves rust resistance and reduces cutting friction
  • GRADE A AMERICAN HICKORY HANDLE - LINSEED OIL FINISH - 150 GRIT SANDED Each axe handle is individually selected for grain orientation and density, completely handmade with a smooth 150 grit sanded finish and coated with boiled linseed for a blister-free experience when using. Each double bit axe head is fixed to the handle with a premium two-wedge system consisting of a wood wedge and steel ring for maximum axe head security
  • INCLUDES FULL GRAIN LEATHER SHEATH - 1 OZ. BOTTLE OF AXE GUARD PROTECTIVE OIL All Helko Werk Axes include a vegetable-tanned premium leather axe sheath to protect your axes and hatchets
  • DIMENSIONS Head Weight: 3.5 lb / Length: 30 in. / Total Weight: 4 ¾ lb

I was and am very impressed. I have been using this axe hard for over a month even for none splitting needs because it works better than my felling axe.

My $37. Lowes ax was strong but didn't cut too well or stay sharp too long.. My Garrett- Wade "Forest Ax" at $70. (handsome as it was) broke on first use (2nd photo). The "Echo" ax from Home Depot and made by Council Tools might have been ok, but since I had the Helko-Werk "Bavarian Woodworker" in one hand and the "Echo" in the other I knew which one I had to keep. Obviously more expensive, but I am pleased with the Helko-Werk ax. Easy to sharpen and stays sharp. The handle is finished in linseed oil which means I didn't have to sand off the paint or lacquer commonly applied to ax handles. Sings through the hard dead wood of trees fallen across the trail, which is a challenge for any ax. I will update if I run into any problems, but I think I'll be using this ax for a long time.

I ordered both the Classic Scout & the Traditional Hessen Woodworker. The Scout , as received, would cut paper. The Hessen, as received would not cut paper but it chopped better than my sharpened hardware axe. The axe heads were exact with the specifications given. The handles completely filled the eyes and were well secured. From the pictures, the Hessen's head appears much larger than the Scout's head; however the weight differences is only 0.25 lbs. Nevertheless, the Hessen felt better in my hands than the Scout.

The Scout's handle was heart wood and the grain orientation was perfect; however, the handle knob was not aligned well with the blade of the axe. The Hessen's handle had both heart wood and sap wood and the handle knob aligned perfectly with the blade of the axe. The throats of each handle were about an inch wide and the width increased to about 1.25 inch at the shoulder.

I kept the Hessen and returned the Scout. The Hessen is a great axe. Although it is lighter and shorter than my hardware axe it cuts as deep or deeper. Helko Werk makes a good product although for the two I compared, I rate the axe head quality superior to the axe handle quality.
