Chewy texture (long cooking time)

Let me first start by saying I had a colon resection about 5 months ago and I have something called "LARS" or "Lower Anterior Resection Syndrome" 'nuff said on that issue except I'm trying to eat high fiber, bulky foods but can't tolerate fruits but grains seem to be OK.

I love hulled barley for it's chewy texture. Sorghum has a similar and even chewier texture. I have found I need to start it 30 minutes before I put hulled barley in the pot or it will still be crunchy when the barley is done. (brown rice goes in even later!).

If you enjoy brown rice, barley and other whole grains, it's likely you wil enjoy Sorghum.
Great Popcorn Alternative

I recently discovered that popping sorghum grains results in miniature popcorn. Because I am sensitive to corn, this is a perfect alternative when I am craving a salty snack like popcorn. I also love the great food quality that Bob's Red Mill ensures!
Delicious grain & Amazon comes through again!

It's a marvelous grain - I wrote a previous review on the 4 pack - so save yourself some more money and buy it 4 bags at a time! Just place them in your freezer if you won't be using it all for months. But you may enjoy it so much, you won't need to do that. It's one of Dr. Gundry's (book Plant Paradox is worth the read & practice!!!) favorite grains and like he says it NEVER gets mushy. It's a great replacement for all other grains such as the over used rice & wheat varieties and minus the lectins (READ THE BOOK!). Prior to this I thought sorghum was just a not so popular dark syrup that country folks used (it's ok, I can say this, I'm country folk!!). It's not easily found in North GA (tried Sprouts, Kroger, Walmart, Ingles - refuse to drive 51 miles OW to Whole Foods) and on line neither Thrive or VitaCost had it. So Thank you again, Amazon for the wonderful variety & the speedy service. What did we do without you?
Delicious grain (lectin free) & can easily replace rice or wheat and is never mushy!!!

I'm following Dr. Gundry's diet from Plant Paradox (it's amazing & my health is becoming likewise) and this is one of his favorite (and now my) grains. As he states, it NEVER gets mushy, has a great taste, can cook lots of it and freeze & thaw quickly for a faster meal service. It can be used in just about any way that rice or any other grain can be used and contains no lectins (read Plant Paradox to understand this). It is not an easy grain to find. In fact Thrive Market (on Line) doesn't care it, nor VitaCost and I haven't found it in any of our local markets from Sprouts, Walmart, Kroger, Ingles in North GA. yet. Amazon is my savior (quite often, THANK YOU AMAZON!) and if you buy it -I think it was 4+ bags at a time, it is an even better price. Just put it in the freezer if you aren't using it for several months. Or be a good neighbor and give it as a gift to someone you want to see improve their health and enjoy it as well! Prior to this I thought Sorghum was just a dark not greatly used syrup! Education is a wonderful thing.
Sorghum did not ever cook
Laura A. Novak✓ Verified PurchaseSeptember 22, 2017
This sorghum came new (packaged just one month ago). When we attempted to cook it (boiling stovetop) only about 5% of it got tender. We boiled the sorghum for over 3 hours and it never cooked. We then attempted to microwave in paper bag to "pop." Only about 5% of the sorghum popped.
