To grommet or not to grommet? That's the question...
Amazon Customer✓ Verified Purchase•July 20, 2018
This product when you first unpackage it will shed small black plastic fragments everywhere. I'd suggest unpacking and handling outside until it's had some time to blow out in the wind. My experience after a few months of use is that it stands up to sun, wind, and uv quite well. I could see this lasting a few seasons no problem if taken care of. The plastic is pretty easy to rip and without grommets it becomes difficult to mount this in a manner that it doesn't just flap around in the wind snagging itself on random objects and tearing. I'll have a better idea about the expected longevity after this growing season concludes.
My area is prone to random hail storms that can ravage uncovered plants in minutes. Usually these happen while I'm at work or sleeping and cannot do anything about it. Watching golf ball sized hail this spring bounce off of the shade cloth while my plants were happy and protected underneath was amazing. That alone has made me not want to leave my garden uncovered from here on out. You spend time, money, and energy into your garden and coming home from work or waking up to destroyed plants late in the season before first harvest just sucks.
I do not have an automated watering system in place in my garden. I've had issues with coming home from work and plants died in a single day due to scorching summer heat and to little water. So far I haven't had that issue this summer when using a shade cloth.
If this is not mounted so the sides are pulled taunt it will flap around in the wind and damage plants. When it rains the cloth picks up quite a bit of water weight and will sag into the tops of your plants. This could either bend or snap the tops of the plants. If your area is prone to rain I'd suggest a shade cloth with grommets and to mount the cloth with several feet of room between it and your plant canopy to ensure it doesn't sag into the tops of your growing plants while unattended.
If you have a specific application in mind for a shade cloth that 100% does not require grommets now or in the future then this product will allow you to save some money. I would suggest spending the extra $10-15 for a shade cloth with the grommets already installed... If I have to purchase another shade cloth on the future it'll have grommets. I need the flexibility of mounting in various configurations, heights, with a ridgeline and without similar to camping with a tarp. Once this growing season is done I will be sewing fabric onto the edges and installing grommets on this myself. In the meantime I weaved nylon string along the four edges and one through the center to create a ridgeline. This "addition" has allowed me to mount the shade cloth in a variety of ways similar to tarp camping. However, the nylon string is slick the shade cloth will slide with ease if allowed.
Overall the product is great and is the cheapest option I found. My suggestion would be spring for a shade cloth with grommets. It is a lot more versatile in the ways you can use it.

Good quality but optimistic shade estimate

I got this to provide some shade to a test bed of wasabi. From a construction standpoint it's fine and not having taped/grommeted edges makes it really easy to clip onto the greenhouse frame. BUT I think the 40% shading estimate (40-55% in the description) is very optimistic. I needed to fold it over to get a decent amount of shade. It's working but I have to get more to get full coverage on my bed.
Not that great

Very thin weaved plastic. It's like what produce will be in. Not sure as of yet how this will cool down the inside of a Palram greenhouse. I get better shade coverage with the Palram shade cloth, though, the inside of the greenhouse is still over 100° with the window and door opened. Planted a shade tree behind the greenhouse in hopes of more shade and cooler temps.
It saves my Gardenia

It works so far so good. I plant a Gardenia jasminoides tree in my backyard. The flowers were very well in the spring season, but they cannot bear the strong sun shine in Texas in summer. I didn't realized the damaged caused by the sun shine until all leaves are gone. I did some research online and decide to use the sun shade cloth to cover my flowers. This shade saves my Gardenia, at least it start growing new leaves right now.
Works great in Phoenix

This has been working great to shade my late summer garden in Phoenix. I draped it over curved PVC pipe and clamped it on using 1-Inch Spring Clamps, (bought 20-pack BORA from Amazon). I'm excited to see how well it works next year when it starts getting really hot again.
