I owned a older version of this camera and simply wore it out so, I bought this one and was I ever so pleasantly surprised!! I doubt that Canon would ever make a inferior product but this camera compared to my older one is a night and day difference! The image quality is outstanding and it's so easy to use that a child could figure it out in a minute!

I got this because it has an external microphone input. I film stage shows, usually from the lighting booth, so I need an external microphone outside the booth, and away from the fan noise. This also lets me use a highly directional microphone to pick up more of the sound from the stage, and less from the audience.
In addition, this has a nice big touch screen, excellent auto-focus, great contrast, a selection of recording formats and rates, and good battery life.
The two things that annoy me are the power plug is rectangular (so it can't spin to relieve stress on the cable), and the display is covered in too many large icons, that you can't dismiss.

This is like my seventh Vixia Canon Cam Corder, this is a 700, both the 600 and 800 are all basically the same cameras, all perform well, when they work. They all seem to have a common defect that at some unpredictable point it will start exhibiting an 'error' message, that the SD card is full, when it is not full. It refuses then to record. Otherwise a fine camera, remarkable. But whats the deal with the error message ? I made sure to get a refurbished this time to get a 90 day return as this last one was just a used model and quit working after 33 days, so no refund on that. I also bought some sort of 2 year warranty plan, hope that might help also. I also plan to never charge the battery in this camera, and to always just use battery power, never leave it plugged in charging while also using. Might have been my problem but nothing comes with booklelts anymore, that is a modern shame.
