I was skeptical as I got rid of my "traditional" mattress and put an older futon mattress (thicker) on the base. I figured out my mattress was causing the stiffness and aches and pains in the morning as well as restless sleep. This Fuli mattress was very easy to open.. no chemical smells or plastic smell or anything. Smells fresh.. The other futon "type" mattress that I had on the base of the original mattress and it was okay as long as I put a egg carton foam on top. My aches and pains stopped.. Then I realized the Fuli Japanese futon would work. I put this futon on top of the other futon mattress which is on top of the base of the orig. mattress. It is fantastic. I think on a hard floor it would be a bit too hard and would have to put a foam eggcrate on top, but on top of the other futon mattress it's great. Not too hard not too soft firm! I haven't "slept" on it yet but it sure feels comfortable... thought it was 2" thick but is barely 1" :-( It actually reminds me of the new mattresses that have that top on them... I like this but don't feel it's worth the price they are asking...especially with foam inside. I didn't know Japanese used foam, that's not traditional.

I did a lot of research of this product prior to purchasing it and compared it to many others. Overall, the price was the factor that made me purchase it.
I find this futon okay. It's not exactly what I thought it would be in the terms of thickness. This product is not 3" thick, nor does it expand to 3" thick. I fold this daily, I hang it up in the sunshine weekly, I beat it out. Even with all of that, the thickness isn't 3".
Sleeping on it: Even though it's on the floor and it is very firm, there is a softness to it. I'm a side sleeper, and with the Tatami mat that I also purchased, I find I fall asleep quick and sleep deeper. This is my first experience with a futon; however, it was a starter. I do plan on going with a different product in a few months.

I do like a firm/hard sleeping surface and use the set on the hardwood floor with nothing underneath. Without a tatami mat, the mattress would be insufficient, imho, but together they work great. I fully adjusted from a very firm regular mattress after about a week. And now, after a few months, I think, I have found my dream mattress, :).

I really love this futon, but after about one month of sleeping on the floor (and rolling it back up every morning) it has sort of hollowed out in the middle. It does help to put an extra layer of rug to pad it a little bit. I am airing it out in the sun today in hopes that it might fluff up a little.
