Oral-B Genius Pro 8000...great toothbrush, but not so great bells and whistles
E B✓ Verified PurchaseOctober 12, 2023
I have used an Oral-B electric toothbrush for many years. In fact my old model is still running strong, so why did I spring for this newer and seemingly better model? Well, first off, I was in the mindset that newer was better. I figured I'd been using my older model for so long that it was bound to die on me sooner or later, and seeing that this latest model had such cool features I jumped right in. The brush itself is just fine. Not necessarily a major improvement over my older model. I liked the choice of settings, including tongue brushing, and seeing how everything has an app now, I was initially wowed by the "cool" factor.

The app is okay. It monitors your daily brushing habits, recording how long and hard you brush, and you can let it know whether or not you brushed your tongue or flossed your teeth or rinsed with mouthwash. And this feature does, in some ways, encourage you to pay more attention to your oral care routine. You can also follow one of five pre-programmed routines that focus on things like fresher breath, or teeth whitening, or gum health, and you can choose focused care for specific areas in your mouth that require additional attention. There is a kid-specific "Fun Zone" that makes brushing a game. Needless to say, I did not download that specific feature. The app reminds you when it's time to replace your brush head and you can even set it up as a Dash button to automatically order you a new brush head directly from Amazon. A newer feature of the app lets you enter your dentist's information to remind you of dental appointments.

The Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 brush connects to the app via bluetooth to automatically monitor and record your brushing activities. You can also set it so that the timer starts once the microphone picks up on the sound of the brush motor. And if you are away from your Oral-B brush but you manage to use a manual toothbrush at the office or while traveling, you can manually start the timer so your brushing activity still counts in the app. Sadly, I've encountered issues with all of these features. The bluetooth connectivity can be spotty at times. It usually works, but not always. In those cases I generally rely on the microphone picking up on the sound of the brush motor to start the timer, but that's not always guaranteed either, and you still have to manually stop the timer when you're done. And even the button in the app to manually start the timer has its bugs. It usually works fine, but it's not always guaranteed. It's nice when the bluetooth connectivity works, but lately I've noticed that it's more hit or miss than when I first started using this. Whether that is related to hardware or software, or both, I couldn't say.

What disappointed me the most however was the Position Detection feature. When I first read about this and saw the videos, I was really excited by the purported technology that combined your phone camera and some type of augmented reality which could track your brush movements and give you feedback, in real time, which areas of your mouth you spent enough time on and which needed more attention. It was a big letdown though. You have to attach a mount for your phone onto your bathroom mirror, which attaches with a strong suction cup, and position it so that your camera is lined up properly and then you have to stand still, in the same spot while brushing so that it can detect your movements. It's definitely nowhere near as exciting or futuristic as they make it out to be. I do use the phone mount on my mirror so I can have easy access to the app, but I have long given up on the Position Detection feature, which, ironically, was probably the original determining factor for buying this particular model in the first place. It's too difficult and cumbersome to try and stand in the exact position while brushing so the camera is lined up just right. It never truly knew where my brush was in my mouth and even when I'd moved on to another quadrant, the app thought I was back in a different zone. After a couple of tries, I just found it wasn't contributing positively to my oral care experience and gave up on that feature.

I travel for work, but I don't ever take my electric toothbrush with me. I always use a manual brush when traveling, and there is also a manual toothbrush in my messenger bag when I'm out and about. My electric toothbrush stays at home so I have no use for the travel charging case. I also don't use the charger/stand that came with this brush. I use the old charger from my previous Oral-B brush since it is small and already in place and works perfectly fine in its existing placement in my bathroom. So these features were completely unnecessary for me and they are still in the box, even months later. Oh, and my original Oral-B toothbrush that was working just fine...I gave that to my brother and he loves it. It serves his needs perfectly, just like it served my needs for years. Ultimately, this model was an unnecessary purchase, given that I already had a perfectly fine Oral-B brush, but was taken in by the gimmicks and concept of a newer model.

If you are looking to get an Oral-B electric toothbrush, I highly recommend it. I prefer Oral-B over the Sonicare brushes I've had in the past. But I would probably recommend a less expensive, less "loaded" model of Oral-B because many of these new and exciting features left me less than impressed. At least my brother is happy with his gift of my older Oral-B Triumph model. I am now trying out a Quip electric toothbrush for my travels. It's essentially a subscription service that replaces the brush head, toothpaste, and battery every 3 months for their proprietary electric brush handle. It's simple and small -about the size of a standard toothbrush- so I find that useful for travel and that will replace my manual brush away from home. However I still use, and will continue to use my Oral-B toothbrush whenever I'm home.
Unleashing the Power of Your Oral-B Toothbrush

Boasting soft bristles and robust settings tailored to cater to a range of dental needs, from sensitive care to ultra-care, this Oral-B electric toothbrush is a one-size-fits-all solution. I was once a manual toothbrush user, believing it to be sufficient for my dental health. However, my dentist disagreed and recommended that I switch to an electric toothbrush, with Oral-B being the top recommendation.

Setting up the toothbrush with my phone via Bluetooth was a breeze, and it unlocked a world of features. One such feature is a timer that tracks the duration of your brushing. The accompanying app offers insights into my brushing habits, showing me areas where I'm brushing too hard or too gently, and highlighting teeth that are receiving too much or too little attention.

One standout feature is the ability to share your progress with your dentist. This allows them to monitor your improvements and provide guidance if necessary. But don't worry, if you're uncomfortable sharing your progress, you can opt-out and just use the app's feedback.

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend this Oral-B electric toothbrush to all. Don't just take my word for it, try it out and witness the swift improvement in your dental health!
Great electronic toothbrush, but get rid of the bulky junk that keeps jacking up the price
Lila Thome✓ Verified PurchaseSeptember 3, 2023
I have owned an Oral-B ProfessionalCare 8000 series toothbrush for at least 5 years and after a 2 week trip away from home where I wasn't able to plug in and charge the toothbrush for 1-2 days on several occasions, my toothbrush was operating at a snails pace and so decided to look for a new toothbrush. I came across the Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 and was really excited. It passed the fakespot test, so I read some of the reviews and decided to buy based on what I learned.

Now after using for a week, this is what I have found:
1. The bluetooth capabilities are bogus. Before purchasing, I already decided I wasn't purchasing for the bluetooth capabilities. I have no doubts I brush my teeth well as that is what my dentist is always telling me. I don't need to track it with bluetooth. Now if you do get it working correctly (nearly all reviews mentioned it was junk), you might be on to something (for someone - but not me), but otherwise, stop jacking up the price with junk. We aren't stupid!
2. In addition, as someone else mentioned in a review, hanging my overpriced phone from a contraption attached to my mirror wasn't going to happen.
3. Storage for additional heads right on the counter next to my toothbrush. To me, it is another thing that is not needed. Aren't people trying to REMOVE things from the counter because there is so little space! I just find no use for it. The toothbrush heads do come separately packaged where I buy them from, so this is another wasted item to jack up the price. Thankfully, this can be separated from the toothbrush charger so it doesn't need to sit on the counter. This was my only concern when purchasing the unit and I am very happy it is separate and can be thrown out.
4. Toothbrush case - This case measures 9 1/4" x 3" x 1 1/2". Thankfully it still fits in my travel case, but it is a much tighter fit (1 1/2 inches longer than my prior case) and now I also need to fit the smart plug if I want to charge. I guess this will depend on the length of the trip. You can charge your phone with the case as long as you bring a USB cable as it does have a slot. However, it is not a fast-charger, so I will be sticking to my fast-charger. Also, if you have a case on your phone, it likely won't fit in the slot for it on the toothbrush case. I just put the phone on the counter. I have only used this once for about 10 minutes to test charging my phone and the plug gets quite warm without charging the toothbrush. I couldn't imagine charging both.
5. Toothbrush - I am happy with the operation of this toothbrush! I have read a review that the "pressure" light is really bright and annoying. I actually haven't found this to be the case, but I don't usually brush my teeth in the dark (like I believe that reviewer was doing so she didn't disturb her sleeping partner). The only thing I was really concerned with is I didn't want the toothbrush to stop brushing if I pressed too hard. If it did, none of my back teeth would get brushed because of my small mouth. Thankfully, this is not the case. It will keep brushing. My back teeth are now getting clean again! My old toothbrush only had an on/off button. This one has 6 brushing modes. Although I like to have my choice, I do wish the button was somewhere else on the toothbrush other than right where I hold the toothbrush. Several times I have changed the brush mode by accident, then have to find the button and press it 5 more times to get back to the mode I want. Annoying.

Overall, the Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 electronic toothbrush is a great toothbrush. I did read a number of reviews about the toothbrush not working after 90 days. Therefore, I bought the 3-year extended warranty (since 90 days is the current warranty). My old toothbrush had a 2 year warranty to begin with so I didn't get an extended warranty. I am disappointed they are making things more breakable now than in the past and not guaranteeing their workmanship. However, I can also say that I was able to apply a $30 coupon to the $139 price and this toothbrush cost less than my original one, and that is including the extended warranty. I just hope it lasts as long as my original one! Only issue I am having is filling out product registration because it wants the exact coupon code I used and Amazon isn't sharing that with me on the invoice or any other documents regarding my purchase.
First Impressions: Best toothbrush I have ever had.

First impressions review

I have been a Phillips Sonicare user for years. Been happy with it, because it was the first real electric toothbrush I ever had. The battery has been failing for the past 2 years and I have pushed it along as long as I could, but now I am lucky if the charge lasts long enough for one brushing. So I have been looking to replace it for a while. A few times I almost got another Sonic care but decided to read up on the Oral-B. I was happy to see and sort of surprised its the only brush approved by the ADA. When I saw that I read reviews of what people think, and most of the reviews are very positive. Some people complain its too harsh, but I think its perfect. I was always skeptical of the round head, I thought the style of the Sonic care would clean better, but with the design of the brush heads and using it one day, I can see how this can clean better.

When I was looking for an Oral B. I saw this one had 6 different speeds, I thought about getting the 3000 series or the 5000 series but I admit the position detection intrigued me. So with the 6 different modes and position detection I thought I would buy this one.

First, the cleanliness of my teeth. AMAZING.

This brush does an amazing job cleaning my teeth. I have tried a few modes on the brush and do not find any too harsh for me. Coming from a Sonic care I think the feel of the brush while your brushing your teeth is actually better. The roundness of the head, allows you to easily change the position to clean your teeth very well.

I have tried the normal speed, the deep clean speed, the whitening speed, tongue cleaner.

Normal speed is great
Deep clean is great as well, not too harsh on me.

Teeth Whitening... This one really surprised me. I thought it may just slow the head down some or change the pattern of the movement some, but it starts off the speed slow, then gradually speeds up to the highest speed for this mode, then goes back to the slow speed and alternates the speed the entire time you brush... I can see how this may really be helpful as it alternates the speed while brushing.

Position detection,

A little disappointed in this. I like it, I like how it ha 2 more sections that it helps you brush with. Each section when your brushing the color will go from dark blue to lighter blue and then from lighter blue to white.

Yes I need to read the instructions, is this to have you do the outside and top on first pass and then inside and top in 2nd pass? If so the think the position sensing can be a little better. There are some times I am brushing the right side off my mouth and it things I am doing the left side. It will get better over time I think. Is this a little gimmicky, yes. I think that if the brush did not depend on your phone to use your camera and the brush had position sensing sensors on the inside of the brush this would be a true position sensing brush. But it does not appear it does? If it does not, then whats the difference between this brush and the other bluetooth brushes. Why does only the 8000 offer this feature.

The pluses of the position sensor, is it helps make sure you clean all parts of your teeth, and makes sure you brush long enough... Without sensing the time defaults to 2 minutes with it defaults to 3 minutes. I think its a fun way to clean your teeth and makes me look forward to brushing. I don't always brush my teeth every day. I am bad, and days I do, its usually only once. But I think this will help get me back in the habit of brushing my heath twice or more on a daily basis..

Pressure sensor works really well. I like how it changes color to let you know if your putting too much pressure on your teeth..

Now as for timer... Another way I think the Oral-B is better than Sonic Care. Atleast the model I have.... When you turn on your brush, it alerts you to change position every 3 seconds.. Great... But then after 2 minutes it shuts off... Sometimes I want to brush a little longer because I want to give extra attention to a specific part of my teeth. But once the 2 minutes is up, it shuts off.

With the Oral-B after the time, it gives an alert letting you know clearly the time is up, but then it continues to work so you can brush longer if you want to.

So my first impression, best brush ever.. I will use it for a while and then update my review.

So in general, I think the Oral-B is a great toothbrush. The cheaper ones, probably work just as well as this one, but then this one gives different modes which I think can be beneficial to me. So if your looking for a new toothbrush, and considering between a Sonic Care and Oral-B. I highly recommend Oral-B toothbrushes...

I have never had an issue with this product for the entire length of time I've had it. I'm leaving a review now because I plan on upgrading soon to a newer oral B product. This product has done an exceptional job with my teeth. Prior to it I would always have a lot of plaque build up this is not the case anymore with this product. In fact it's so good that dentists think I floss. Anytime I go to the dentist I get nothing but compliments on my teeth. I have not had any issues charging or otherwise getting it to work. My only critique is that the app itself for this brush isn't that great but outside of that almost a decade later this brush is still going strong with no issues.
