quite a nice geek gift

I know whining complaining negative reviews go with the territory but the all glass design and level of vacuum in this particular item are spot on. It took about 3-4 minutes for the rotor to settle down after opening but once it was motionless I held the flame of a disposable lighter about 4 inches away and saw slow rotation. The big surprise was the led flashlight I usually carry. It's somewhere around 280 lumens and I got what I would estimate to be a respectable 20 r.p.m. out of the radiometer by holding the flashlight almost a foot away! I hesitate to throw shade at other designs but this all glass version just seems to make sense: If it works well when you get it the only thing I can imagine that would degrade performance would be an unfortunate drunken accident. I've only had it for about 30 minutes and it's New Years Eve so I am in the process of getting drunk so.....Knock on wood, wish me luck. (update: A lit cigarette spins it from about 1.5 inches away from the glass! )
It spins

This radiometer HATES uv rays. It gets so angry when it interacts with the radiation it spins. Doesn't get as angry on cloudy days. Gets angrier the closer it is to the equator.
Simple and inexpensive cool physics gift

It's a gift so I took it out shortly and put it next to a bright lamp, and it seemed to start to move. So I assume it will work perfectly next to a sunny window.
I got these for all my friends!

Not only do I have these on multiple window sills around the house, I also bought them for a bunch of my friends and they said their work satisfaction from watching this thing spin in their office has increased by 20% 😂 very very cool and educational little gadget. Watch Technology Connections video on this if you want to actually know how it works.
Does what it’s supposed to do

The media could not be loaded. Compared to the standard, kid's black plastic base model, it holds it's own.
