Really enjoy this.
Annoying packaging but the actual video is good

The package has the disks packaged in 2 plastic boxes with the disks stacked in an odd mix of two spindles with overlapping of every 2 o3 disks. This is the reason for the lack of a star in the rating.
All the videos work fine and I purchased an inexpensive DVD case to repackage them individually to avoid all the disk shuffling to get to the one you left off at.
I first watched the show almost 50 years ago on PBS when I was a teenager and it is great to have all the episodes finally after only being able to find some of them here and there on streaming services. Even Britbox only has the first 8 seasons for some reason.

Needs A Region Free DVD Player To Watch It

I love this series it brings back a lot of great memories of the UK. Nice scenery of Yorkshire, too. Anyway, great series!!! Wish BBC had released the complete series a long time ago. Also would like to have seen the set released in Region1/NTSC instead of Region 2/PAL. Just as a reminder to anyone else here in the States thinking about buying this set you must have a region free DVD player in order to watch it...
Wonderful program - terrible presentation/storage box

Before I get into anything negative, let me say that this whole series is pure gold.
How Roy Clarke could have written such quality with such consistency (along with other sitcoms!) for so LONG (this is the longest running sitcom in the World!) is mind blowing. Add to that the immortal characters and you have the stuff that legendary programs are made of.
So WHY oh why did the BBC provide such appalling packaging for this 51 disc set?
I can only think of one reason - CHEAP!
It's almost an insult for such a great archive.
The outer cardboard packaging was very robust and arrived as stated. Inside was where the problems began.
Having removed the cellophane wrapping, the "˜sleeve' soon revealed a thin paper sheet which, though colourful, didn't tell me anything regarding episodes or chapter titles.
Only cast and a brief description of the whole thing.
Even worse was when I opened up the box. Two halves containing so many discs HAD to be compromised, and it was. Each "˜half' of the now open box opens upon itself again to reveal the discs. It took me a real struggle to discover that the inner hinges open OUTwards toward the edges of the box! This involved a near accident too as I tried to "˜unhinge' the containers to access the discs! Then three of the discs fell out - obviously having come loose in transit or handling. Fortunately they weren't damaged.
So, having put them firmly back on their relative spindles I was curious to see the quality of recordings, especially the earlier episodes. I recommend that because there are at least three, sometimes four discs on each spindle, you remove them ALL TOGETHER then choose the disc you want, otherwise trying to prise them out individually could damage a disc. Yes, very fiddly!
Playing the first disc was surprising as the color was overly saturated. A small adjustment soon took care of that but the picture still didn't look "˜right'. Several "˜tweaks' later I found that reducing the SHARPNESS setting got rid of the "˜surrounding edging' of the front characters and they now took on a more natural and almost 3-D imaging. Lovely!
Sound quality was equally as good so I was now enjoying both new and old episodes, with no ads, no weather warnings and in pristine HD quality.
I've only watched a handful of episodes so far, but if they all match the first few, I shall be well happy.
I really do recommend this set but if I could throw away the box for something better I would. The cover has NO episode listing guide or details of episode content!! And even the outer sleeve comes loose and can tear!! This is UNACCEPTABLE BBC!!!
Go online though and you can download (and print) an episode list anyway. BUT you will then find that what is listed on the internet and what is on the discs doesn't match! Typical!! But the discs in this set ARE in chronological order, all EXCEPT for the Specials - again typical!!
For something of this magnitude, I would have thought they would have included a few Extra video features; like of "The making of", or even the humble character interviews, but no. Nothing!
Hard to believe that such a historic milestone of comedy has only the bare bones. But WHAT "˜bones'. WHAT a wonderful legacy.
Now stop being so miserly BBC!!
