FALSELY ADVERTISED

This is the biggest scam that can be sold. Had the handheld scanner for 4 years or so worked great. They stopped the program that ran it so we were forced to upgrade. Bought the NEAT DESK and took 3 days just to get it to install. Because they make you buy an additional yearly package for you to access technical support on the phone. You are allowed to email them with any purchase but in order to speak to anyone you must pay for package. So again we were forced to buy package and have dealt with technical support for last 4 days now trying to figure out why it's not working properly.
Simply put it is falsely advertised it doesn't do anything it says it will do EXCEPT MAKE A COPY/ SCAN of the paper you are putting through it.
I have scanned over 200 receipts and I have had to go back and correct EVERY single one of them. It doesn't recognize the correct name, amount, date, tax amount or payment form.
Called technical support AGAIN and asked why it was not working properly. And was told the software that runs it is the problem it won't always recognize the receipt. I was then informed that the only remedy for the problem is to input all the information manually. Not a big deal if you have a few to scan but with a company you will pull your hair out trying this method.
Bottom line falsely advertised and sold and shouldn't be sold if product doesn't do what it says.
Anyone looking to buy this product think twice better off buying simple scanner and setting up files manually since your going to have to do that anyway.
Good luck buying a new car and the keep the wheels from you then make you buy them at an additional cost only to find out the don't hold air like they were advertised to do.

I purchased a Neat Desk five or six years ago. The scanner still works ( have had a few issues, but mainly software related). When I bought the scanner, it was to have document copies and scanned receipts for income tax reasons. The files are saved to my computer, backed up on a network drive here at the house, occasionally backed up to a portable drive and also back up with an online cloud storage. Last November the software would suddenly not open up. Apparently it had something to do with interference with what they call legacy software (mainly back up software). I tried everything I could to disable those temporarily, but was unable to get it to work ( nor do I want to constantly disable my backups to get Neat Desk to work). Since I do not need their cloud service (I already back up these files as well as all my others) and do not subscribe to them I cannot talk to anyone. It says I can email them, but when I click on their link, guess what? It does not work. As of now I cannot even access my scans over the last five to seven years since the software will not open. I am not going to be coerced into buying cloud service I do not need to access my files I spent many hours scanning in using a scanner I paid full price for. My advise, do not buy from these people.
Lousy, terrible customer support! Do NOT recommend Neat products or services.

UPDATE: I solved my NeatDesk problem by replacing it with a Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 (available on Amazon). It even allows me to store my scanned documents in my Neat Library.
RE: MY EXPERIENCE WITH NEATDESK: In concept, this is a great idea: scan all that paperwork and trash the hard-copy versions. Then, easily access your stuff, based on your own organization design. Even "print" stuff from your computer directly into the program without having to make/scan a hard copy!
I bought the Neat system for my Mac in 2013. Initially, it was okay--I would have wished for other features, such as automatic export into Quicken/TurboTax and even automatic fill-in of basic info such as name, amount. But it did allow me to preserve a lot of paperwork that otherwise just takes up space (and required me to manually file the endless number of papers).
I had some mechanical issues with the scanner (Model ND1000), such as jamming and the program not recognizing the scanner. I was able to partially resolve these issues by purchasing cleaning sheets and calibration paper from Neat, and continually rebooting the scanner and/or the software program. But I've never completely resolved these issues.
Then Neat started to revise the software. No longer good with Mac's using up-to-date OS. Constant unexplained crashes. Neat has announced (2016) that it is retiring the "legacy" version and will concentrate only on the cloud-based version. Okay.
So I signed up for the cloud version. Guess what? It doesn't display the image of my documents. This makes it basically useless.
And now let's talk about the customer service. Short discussion, because there is basically none. Direct support (i.e., telephone or chat) is available for only 60 days after purchase. So in 2016, I purchased ($49.00) a new support plan. That, too, only gave me 60 days of direct support. Now I must send e-mails and wait for response (72 hours or more).
Despite following their on-line instructions to the letter, I've now been locked out of my account, period. So I sent them an e-mail.
I tried to call the phone numbers listed for customer support. All automated now, and all options refer you back to the website. I received e-mails telling me how to unlock my account. I've followed them, without success.
If you cannot access your website, because they have locked you out, then what?
Here's what: I'm searching for alternatives to this product and that system.

This is the worst supported office tool ever. I purchased this product less than 18 months ago. Had to change computers and found out the software for my NEAT ND1000 is no longer supported by the company. Two days with tech support and about 8 hours of IT time I was told for $14.99 a month (extortion money) I could get access to my files (via the cloud)on the old computer. If they could give me access to my files that easy why are they charging me $14.99 a month to access them. If you do decide to purchase this product you must realize you don't own your documents once you've scanned them into your computer, NEAT company owns them. If your computer goes down or the software to operate know they (NEAT company) will shake you down like a Russian mobster to get your files back.
Lackluster in hardware and software, not ready for prime time

This worked pretty good when it was new, but after about a year of use I can say I'm pretty unhappy with this.
First off, let's talk hardware. The scanner worked great out of the box, but even after repeated cleanings, it just stopped working well. About half the time with a stack of papers it will fail to separate individual sheets, or it will pull them in extremely crooked to the point where the sides get folded and obscured from the scanner. It seems that different weights of paper aren't handled uniformly. Receipts don't always trigger the sensor to allow you to scan so sometimes you have to wiggle it around or shove it in to get things moving. So, the idea is that you're going to go straight from your mail or wallet into the machine is just a fantasy. Expect a lot of babysitting. Combine this with the software and you might even have to scan the same document multiple times.
Moving on to that software, be aware that Neat no longer supports it at all. They only support a "cloud" version where everything is hosted on their side (who knows what their security looks like, still feel comfortable scanning bank statements?) and you have to pay monthly or else you lose access to it all. The unsupported desktop version lets you store your scans locally but you will still get nagged for a required login and password to connect to their servers so it can phone home and do... something. Not sure what that something is and there is no option to turn this "login" off. Speaking of which, the software is woefully outdated for 2016. The detection of documents versus receipts simply does not work except with narrow receipts, so turn off detection and micromanage everything. OCR works fairly well but it's single threaded and it just takes forever. Now, if it detected your document as a receipt, you have to push it back into the OCR queue and wait some more. You can scan during this process, but if the software crashes you're left wondering what got in and what didn't. I've had a few situations where it would crash then continue to crash on every start until I deleted the entire queue. Because of the lag between scanning it and getting it fed into the system, you have to keep an intermediate stack "scanned but not processed" in order to not miss something.
Scan quality is ok but the software leaves a lot to be desired. It's very slow reordering pages and rotating images and is lacking on non-90 degree rotation and quality settings like DPI, color balance, and de-moire. Navigating to get a full-screen view is not intuitive.
Unfortunately, because of the monthly subscriptions and push for cloud, it's unlikely this product and it's ecosystem will get any attention from Neat because it won't generate income beyond the purchase of the expensive hardware. At least they provide an export function but I'm not sure I want to take a chance on a different company's document management system since it seems everything out there has pretty significant flaws.
