We had two gerbils brothers who had to be separated due to bullying by one so we had them in side by side tanks with cage toppers and they used to run up to their top shelf to see/smell and 'talk' to each other.
Sadly one passed away and it was obvious the remaining one was depressed. I decided to get this mirror toy and hang it off of the other cage's side so that the gerbil would see his reflection and hopefully think his brother was still there. It worked! We saw a remarkable difference in his demeanor and behavior after we hung it up!
