great icing for simple designs

This Wilton decorator Icing is as good as it gets if you do not have a local bake shop that you can buy buttercream from. I prefer my local Bake shops buttercream for a couple reasons. It is slightly cheaper, about $5 less for the same amount and I know that it is fresh because they pack the containers themselves. If i didn't have that place close to me, this would work just fine and I would be happy with it. 4lbs of buttercream will coat about 2 cakes, with 2 layers each. We did one cake for Easter and still had half the container left. It spreads nicely and the medium consistency is perfect for cakes and cupcakes. BUT if you want to do more intricate flowers, you need something a little more stiff. Try refrigerating the frosting before you use it. Sometimes this simple trick makes all the difference. If that doesn't work, little by little add some sifted powdered sugar to the icing to stiffen it up. Notice that the pictures in the description are of simple, not dainty designs. Those are accurate to what the consistency of this buttercream can do. If you want tiny, cute, fragile flowers or leaves, you need to make it more stiff.
Once you use true decorator icing, you will never go back to store bought Betty Crocker ever again(unless it's for the funfetti icing, which I LOVE for some strange reason) Store bought does not hold shape or leave your cake looking nearly as nice as this!! Good luck and have fun using this icing!!

Of course it's good-- it's a Wilton Product -- and I have always liked Wilton products--
This icing is Medium, not stiff, so a little goes a long way -- and although it's a little harder to use it for icing a cake, once you master the technique, you do your cup cakes and cakes proud!
What I like most about this Wilton Decorator Icing is that there is no LARD in the ingredients -- and it spreads and tastes so much better than what you get on the grocery store shelves. The color is a little off-white, but of course food coloring can be used (sparingly I would think, so as not to make the icing too soft). The price is right -- it's the equivalent plus a little more, of 4 pounds of store bought prepackaged icing, and sooo much better!!!
I glop it sparingly atop cupcakes, then smooth it out (I like to poke discreet holes into the tops of the cupcakes so the icing sinks in and adds more enjoyment) , and I use a flat, solid spatula to slather it on to the top and sides of a cake. I decided not to make rosettes or cute adornments on top of the cake because of the relative softness of this icing -- a simple "ribbon trim" of icing on top of the already iced cake worked better for me, a rank amateur. It is easy to pipe out the icing and also easy to write onto the top of the cake or add a dollop of cuteness to the top of a cupcake.
