My cat likes to play in the litter box and throw sand all over the place. I ended up switching the litter and now it all lands on the large mat. I'm using a litter with no clay in it because I heard that clay can ruin hardwood floors. Be careful what you buy because you think you're buying a normal scope of a litter, but there is clay in a lot of them. I ended up using a crystal litter that you order through the mail, one bag last the whole month for one cat it's true

It's a pretty good size and the texture traps the litter and keeps it localized near the box. The only thing I don't like is that it's a bit sticky and tends to stick very lightly to anything that gets placed on top of it. The cats don't seem to mind, but I very slightly do. Not enough to return it, though.

It basically works perfectly for what I need, stays in place, large enough, made of decent material, and catches majority of litter but the only downside that doesn't really bother me is that it is harder to clean.

Backstory: For the last year and a half we've just kept Chicken's litter box in the bathtub of our main bathroom (99% of the time we just use the 3/4 bathroom attached to our bedroom since it's just the two of us, and due to the Global Panorama it's not like we've had a lot of company that would need to use the shower in there anyway, so it's been a pretty good solution). He doesn't spray or "miss" the box at all, but he IS a digger - for which we are very grateful, because he does an excellent job at burying his poops, which definitely keeps the smell down. BUT, because he likes digging/burying so much, he often ends up with a bunch of extra/loose litter...so I sealed up the drain in the tub (Glad Press 'n Seal is good for SO much more than just leftovers in your fridge) to make sure nothing ended up in the pipes, and bam, easy peasy litter containment.
HOWEVER, now that my partner and I have both received our second dose of vaccine, and my parents several states away have ALSO received both of their doses, they've decided that they're going to make the drive over and stay with us for a week or two. We're all pretty excited, because it's been over a year since we've seen each other, and eventually video chats just don't cut it anymore! We didn't really want them having to come into our bedroom to get to the bathroom to shower while they're here, so it was time to find a new home for the litterbox.
I purchased two of these mats. I put one on the floor right up against/into the corner to set the litterbox ON. I cut the second one in half and used 3M Command Strips to adhere each half on to each side of the wall in the corner several inches above the top lip/edge of the litterbox. The corners and edges of the mats are nice and straight/even, so they met up snugly in the corner of the two walls, and they perfectly match (obviously) the first mat that's on the floor. So now I've created a scratch-proof, liquid-proof, better-than-just-plastic (my original thought was to try something similar with a shower curtain, but I didn't like the idea of just sticking plastic on the walls, like, I didn't want it to look like some kind of crime scene or something?) corner nook/area for the litterbox so both the walls and the carpet are protected from accidents and flying litter!
My partner (who begrudgingly loves the cat, but 100% HATES the litterbox) even thinks it looks "pretty nice for a sh*t box" so that's saying something! This was an excellent purchase, and I'm SO glad it worked out. The thickness/heaviness/quality of the mat is much better than I thought it would be. There was a bit of an odor when I first took them out of the bag, but it went away really quickly and it wasn't all that strong to begin with (noticeable but not overpowering). Even after cutting one of the mats in half, the edge is still solid - it's definitely not going to 'unravel' or fray or start falling apart. They're heavy which is great because I know they're not going to move or slide around. They're very flexible/soft/pliable which is also really nice, because sometimes the mats that are more firm or stiff end up warping or curling up around the edges - these mats won't do that!

We have a tiny closet under the stairs and this fits in perfectly to cover the entire floor undeath our XL litter mat. Containing the litter well and looks easy to shake out when needed.
