I made my own air vent frames to place over my air vents so that I can easily change the filter. This air filter insert works great so far. I think the thickness is perfect. It doesn't prevent the air flow like others and is capturing the dust pretty well.

I have these on every vent in my home, intake, and output. They are a hassle to install for me because I have them inside the vents and registers. The material is thin enough to allow sufficient airflow. The velcro does not hold well unless you use very long strips. You will do yourself a favor to get extra from a hardware store.
I have five Maine Coon cats. They have long hair, lots of dander, even though I brush them daily, and they do track litter everywhere. I will also mention that I have air purifiers in every room, which helps. I also have a UV light on my furnace. I still have lots of cleaning and vacuuming daily, but I am sure it would be worse without precautions in place. My goal is to have company in my home and my guests comfortable. Guests with allergies can breathe and don't leave with cat hair stuck to their clothing.
You will do excellent service yourself by attaching these filters to the intake vents. I could not believe how much hair, dander, dust, and whatever else the filter captured. Air vent filters will save your HVAC system in the long haul.

I use this filter to cover my wall Heating/AC unit. I measured and made a pattern of newspaper to use over again to cut the right size filter. I place some of the Velcro tape around the vent to hold filter in place and finish sealing with extra strength duct tape to keep dust and debris from leaking through seams. I change about every 4 to 6 weeks or until I start feeling dust coming through into the room again. I would have given 5 stars but over the past few years they are given you less product in the bag. It's worth buying two bags in case you make a mistake cutting filter size.

We live in a condo and the new neighbors downstairs smoke cigarettes inside their house, especially in the bedroom. The smell permeates throughout our condo. We tried HEPA filters, vinegar, charcoal bags .. but nothing prevented the cigarette smell when the central heaters/air turned on, until now. We covered all of our vents with these filters and no more smell!! It's great! They don't look nearly as bad as we anticipated, either. They stick on very easily and come with rows of tape, easy to peel off and apply. You cut each piece to fit the size of your vent. Super easy to cut. They are solid white, thin and flexible and soft, and we placed ours on the outside of the vents, although they could easily be placed inside to make them not visible. Either way, these solved the problem. We also used these in a room next to the laundry room to cut down on dust, and it helped. We have only used them for a few weeks, so we'll have to update to see how long they last. But so far, so good.

Noticed a ton of dust the last time i changed the air filter on the furnace, and decided to order these.
I do have cats, and the litterbox does throw some dust. Run an air purifier to try to help already, but decided it's not getting enough on its own.
The package came with enough fabric and velcro to handle my 3 return registers, and I have enough extra to cover the vents a second time. The velcro works flawlessly, but i don't know how much hold it would have if I would put it on the vent throwing air into the room.
The fabric is pretty thin, but my household scissors struggled terribly. Would heavily recommend getting fabric scissors.
Edit: After a few months, there is less dust around the house.
Photo is from a small fan above the cat's litter box to catch some dust. I have some on a larger box fan to help as well.
