High hopes, but a little lack luster out of the box
Andrew R.March 25, 2018
High hopes, but a little lack luster out of the box. Initial impression started a very straight forward physical installation, but moved onto the Ecobee app (android) crashing out a few times trying to setup the device and having to reset the device to defaults to get it to try again.

After working past the initial setup I was dumbfounded to find the device is not yet compatible with Ecobee's own thermostats as a remote sensor (this was 50% of my interest as the sensors drop in and out on the far side of my home). Their site says they should have this functionality by summer, but this seemed very half baked at release time.

This replaced a Z-Wave switch, so second step was attempting to set it up in SmartThings - their site has a howto which doesn't mesh with the smart things app I have (no Lights & Switches category in mine under adding a thing) - so another 40% down of my interest down the drain.

Finally setup Alexa - this is replacing an echo dot on our kitchen counter - this worked fine, is reasonably loud and works as expected.

Overall I'm giving this a generous 3 stars for now, I'll revisit it when they get the SmartThings & integration with their other products out the door, hopefully that'll be sooner than later?
Alexa, Google, and HomeKit compatible switch makes this the best there is!
LopezziMarch 24, 2018
Awesome smart switch with all the bells and whistles. If you have an ecobee thermostat, it even amplifies it's awesomeness! To start, it works as you'd expect a standard light switch to work. You press button, light turns on instantly. You press button again, light turns off. Simple.

Now, if you have an ecobee thermostat, this will also double as an extra temp, motion, and occupancy sensor to help balance out your house and let you know if any kind of motion is detected. It also has a built in nightlight that will illuminate when it gets dark so you have a small light to guide you in the dark. The motion sensors can also be used to automatically turn on and off the lights when you enter and leave the room so there is no forgetting to turn the lights off (kids) or even on if you want that feature. This feature (as well as the night light) can be turned off in the app if you don't want it.

The next major feature of this switch is that it has a full blown Alexa inside of it. Once you register it to your account, it can do practically everything a Echo device can do. It has a light bar on it just like a typical Alexa device that provides feedback for what you ask it. The recognition works very well and it even has the ESP on it, so if you have multiple switches or other Echo devices, they won't all respond at once, only the device closest to you will. The speaker is not terrible, but obviously due to it's size, it's not the most amazing speaker to listen to music on. It's not bad by any means, but you won't be blown away by it's fidelity or anything. I'd say it's on par with a Dot. The one thing I REALLY hope ecobee (or Amazon) brings is to allow these devices to be used in audio groups so if you have multiple switches, you could have a makeshift whole home audio and have all your music playing through all the switches. That would be killer in my opinion.

And finally for Google Home and Apple users, it is compatible with Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit. I absolutely love the HomeKit compatibility as it allows me to use Siri to turn the lights on/off and gives me notifications on motion and allows automation through the Home app. The HomeKit integration is a must have and I'm so glad that ecobee is supporting all the major smart home integrations.

If you're in the market for a smart switch, it's real hard to beat this one by ecobee, it has just about everything you could want out of one and supports all the major players.
Does not have the drop in and call features of Alexa!
Alan KandelMarch 24, 2018
Was very excited about getting the Switch+. Install was easy. The main reason for me defying the switch was to replace my Echo Dot with a clean look. I use my Echo Dot to call and drop in on other Echo's around my house. Unfortunately, the Echobee Switch+ Is missing this feature! Once it is available I would rate this devise a 5. But as it's not, this is a $100 disappointment.
"Invisible" Voice Control for Your Home
Andy SlyeMarch 24, 2018
ecobee Switch+ is a smart light switch with far-field voice technology and built-in Amazon Alexa virtual assistant voice control.

The Switch+ is like a smart personal assistant and simple light switch wrapped into one. With the built-in microphone and speaker for Amazon Alexa, the Switch+ enables invisible voice control in any room it's installed in. It also provides smart light control by detecting occupancy and daylight. Also, a software update coming this summer will enable the Switch+ to function as a sensor to manage hot or cold spots in a room when the switch is paired with an ecobee thermostat. Like all ecobee products, the Switch+ integrates with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, SmartThings, and IFTTT.

Inside the box you'll find the Switch+, a wall plate, 4 wire nuts, 2 mounting screws, and the setup guide. The install is fairly simple and only takes about 45 minutes. Even though you can follow the setup guide that comes in the box, it's probably easier to download the free ecobee app because the app will actually walk you through the entire process with helpful videos.

After installing, you can use the ecobee app to finish setting up the Switch+ by creating your free ecobee account, giving your Switch+ a name & location, and connecting it to your WiFi network. Keep in mind that even though it has built-in WiFi, it does not have Bluetooth enabled at this time. Once it's fully set up you can control your Switch+ from anywhere using the ecobee app as long as you're connected to the internet.

On the app home screen you can quickly turn the light on or off using the main button or you can tap the middle icon at the bottom to bring up more controls. the Smart On feature will automatically turn on the lights when someone enters the room. If you enable daylight detection, Smart On will only activate when the room is dark. Smart Off will turn the lights off when no one is in the room, and you can set the off timer to different intervals based on your preference. Another awesome feature is the built-in night light which will automatically glow when the room is dark. And if you have your Switch+ set up as an outdoor light, you can set it to automatically turn on at sunset which is nice.

Amazon Alexa is a big part of the Switch+ because it allows you to perform voice commands like asking it to set a timer, read the news, give you the weather forecast, and more. This is all part of ecobee's "Whole Home Voice" vision to deliver effortless hands-free voice control in every room without dealing with hubs or wires.

To start using Amazon Alexa, first link your Amazon account within the ecobee app. Then download the free Amazon Alexa app and sign in with your Amazon account. Next, add the ecobee skill and authorize Amazon Alexa with your Switch+. Then you can ask Alexa to discover devices, and Alexa should respond with the name of your Switch+.

What's really cool is the built-in speaker that I mentioned earlier, and if you're in the US and have Amazon Prime you can tell it to play any song that's available on Amazon Prime Music and it will play it out of the speaker. Don't expect to use this as a high fidelity party speaker for loud music but honestly if you just want to listen to low-level background music while you're working or studying, this little speaker does the job. You can also listen to iHeartRadio and use Tune-In Radio for audiobooks & podcasts, with support for SiriusXM & Pandora coming soon.

Switch+ does not currently have Spotify integration but if you have an Amazon Alexa-enabled Sonos speaker, you can ask Alexa to play music on Spotify that way. I don't have a Sonos speaker but I was able to add a skill in the Amazon Alexa app that lets me control the playback of Spotify on my iMac which is pretty cool. And that is the key, search the Amazon Alexa app for any skill that you're interested in and if it's available you can add that skill to the ecobee Switch+. And you can also control other smart lights in your home if they're connected to your Amazon Alexa account. I was also surprised at how well the Switch+ picked up my voice from across the room and even when I was playing music pretty loudly it heard me most of the time.

Overall I think this is a pretty neat smart device that is perfect for people who want voice-control in their home without adding bulky hubs or wired speakers since this is just a small light switch hidden on the wall.
A Great Addition to Your Smart Home
J. MillerMarch 24, 2018
Overall the Switch+ has been a great addition to my house. My kids love the Alexa features and use it constantly to play their favorite songs.

Installation was quick and easy. The long wire leads make it easy to connect the device and have plenty of room to work. My Switch is installed in a 3-gang box with 2 other switches so I did not use the included cover plate. Depending on how your house is wired you may need to double check before getting. You need 2 blacks (or black and red) and a white (neutral) for installation. It is also not compatible on circuits with multiple switches (3 way/4 way).

The everyday use of it is effortless, and most days my family and I don't even realize how often it gets utilized. As we walk by and tell it to shut the TV off on the way to bed since my harmony remote is also able to integrate with Alexa.

My Switch controls my front porch light, and is setup to work with automatic on and off so we aren't walking up to the house when it's dark. And if we "forget" then it just shuts itself off instead of just constantly staying on like it used to.

So far the integrated temperature and occupancy sensors haven't been integrated with the ecobee thermostat, although you can see them in HomeKit. Once that is rolled out it will be a truly complete add on for the ecobee thermostats. As I will be able to eliminate the nearby sensor on the adjacent wall.
