Don't let the Folgers name fool you. This is THE best grocery store coffee you can buy.

I am somewhat of a coffee connoisseur and am quite particular. I do tend toward dark roasts because they are lower in acidity, and I prefer to taste the bean rather than the acid. Smuckers, who owns the Folgers brand, made some bad decisions in my opinion, by buying up some really good coffees and labeling them with the Folders brand. Folgers makes me think of the low-quality, pedestrian coffee that my mother and grandmother made. This is definitely not that.
I buy the whole beans - which I've never seen for this brand in a grocery store - and grind them fresh each day. If you don't grind, I have to say that the pre-ground version of Folgers 1850 Black Gold is still really good. Ground or whole bean, the flavor is intense and satisfying from the time it touches the tongue.
Highly recommended.

I've been buying 1850 for a couple of years. The Black Gold reminds me of the original Folgers of the 60's and 70's. They have discontinued this coffee but I'm letting it go. The price is just too much. Expensive!
Good value for money

I use the Clever Coffee Dripper, course grind, water temperature 195F. The flavor is smooth, not too bold. This is not my ultimate coffee but it is good for every day sipping. I note that water temperature seems to make a big difference in the flavor of the coffee, more than other beans. Bottom line: not great coffee but good enough and a fine value.
Surprisingly Excellent

I say 'suprisingly' only because Folgers retail brand is not something I use because I like fresh ground higher end coffees. I buy only whole bean and have a superautomatic machine to make it daily. I saw a commercial on Folgers 1850 higher grade and thought I'd give it a try. To my surprise, 1850 is better than nearly all the higher dollar brands which cost 2 to 3 times as much. They have certainly mastered this product. This is an excellent coffee and my choice for daily use now over all the others. Highly recommend.
Great dark coffee

The 1850 Black Gold Dark Roast Coffee, Whole Bean is wonderful. it's very dark roast but not super bitter, just the right amount of bite, we grind it to espresso ground and put it through the espresso machine, it makes a lovely crema and great little cup of espresso. I don't use anything in my coffee, no sugar, no cream, so any off burnt taste or super bitter is an issue. This is strong but smooth and delicious.
