I couldn't be happier with my purchase
Armande✓ Verified Purchase•May 31, 2018
I did a lot of research and read countless reviews before buying a pump for my first aquarium. I needed a pump that was effective, small in size, and quiet. So far, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I have this suctioned to the outside of a 3-gallon jar aquarium. I can't hear any noise from the pump. The only sound is coming from the bubbles in the water ... which I enjoy. Using it with the accompanying airstone, it created a safe turbulence for my Betta. He loved swimming through the soft flow of bubbles. But then my sponge filter was delivered (I had always planned to go with a sponge filter - believing it to be superior to just the airstone). Once hooked up, the flow of water was too forceful. I tied a knot in the hose and then adjusted the tightness of it until I got the right flow. Now, Dwight is back to enjoying the gentle current of bubbles it produces. Right now, the pump gets a solid 5 stars from me and I would not hesitate to recommend or repurchase. I'll update my review if things change.
Not a good first impression - confirmed

Welp, just got it today. The good is that it is indeed silent. The bad is that I can't submerge it more than about 4 inches and still get any air flowing through the stone. I have an 18" deep tank so this should be able to get to near or on the bottom and still work. I think the issue is with the airstone though, as bubbles are only flowing out in one or two tiny spots--I may pick up another one and see if that fixes it. If it does then I will revise my review and rating, though it's a notch down if I have to go and buy an airstone to get it working. If it doesn't fix anything it is going back.
Edit: picked up a new airstone and tried it. Same issue. Perhaps this is a lemon, but the pump simply doesn't have enough power to push air down past a few inches. Even at the top of the water the bubbles are very weak, much weaker than it should be. Returning. I'd give zero stars if I could since now I'm out a couple bucks for an airstone to go with this POS.

Quiet, but only suitable for use with the supplied diffuser in shallow tanks

It is quieter than the current generation of rubber or elastic diaphragm air pumps, but if you want to drive an air diffuser different than the supplied coarse air stone you are likely to be disappointed in the air volume. The pump is capable of providing a modest flow through the supplied diffuser at a depth of 18" but it would likely be insufficient to drive one side of an under gravel filter and useless if you were attempting to split the flow across two.
My application is atypical, I am using the pump and stone to oxygenate the return flow from a filter in a heavily populated plant tank once the lights are shut off. The supplied stone is hung at a depth of less than a foot in the water column so the air volume is sufficient, but it is much less than the Fusion 500 pump https://www.amazon.com/JW-Pet-10-Fusion-Pump/dp/B00NCPQ6LW it replaced.
There really has not been a powerful quiet pump on the market since Silent Giant Pump Company went out of business in the late 1970s.

works pretty well and is quiet.

Pump is quite but all of the bubbles are coming out between the stone and the connector, not from the stone itself, so they are very large. I've checked and it's not that the tube is too lose--it's that the seal between the stone and the nipple is broken, seemingly all the way around.
Update: After soaking for a couple of days the stone is working. Bubbles are still pretty big, but air pressure is good and it's doing the job I want--getting rid of surface biofilm without stressing out my betta. Sends up a fine spray onto my lights, though, which is probably because it's a 5g long tank, so there's not a lot of water slowing the bubbles down. I'm going to try it with a bubble wall to see if that distributes the energy more. I also noticed that while the pump is super quite the noise from the whole system depends on where you place the stone. If it's up against the aquarium wall it can be pretty loud. When I pushed mine down into the gravel it quieted right up.

but after a few minutes it started letting out a buzzing/vibrating sound that is loud and very annoying. The buzzing faded after a few seconds

I purchased this pump looking for something that is quiet. I even bought two of them. The pump was very quiet initially, but after a few minutes it started letting out a buzzing/vibrating sound that is loud and very annoying. The buzzing faded after a few seconds, only to return shortly after. The pump basically lets out a loud annoying buzzing that lasts anywhere from 5-30 seconds about every minute. It is not regular, but it is very frequent; probably on average once a minute. The attached video captures the start of one of these buzzing episodes. I'm surprised at all the positive reviews- this does not seem to be a manufacturing defect since BOTH the pumps I do this.
