The proper way to provide speed control for small dc motors is via pwm. This provides speed control while maximizing torque, which is not the case if a rheostat is used instead. This one is fairly inexpensive and works well, though I haven't run it a lot yet.
Works very well as an electric motor "throttle".

I purchased this switch set for one of my projects, using it in conjunction with my 12v power supply unit. I use the switch constantly for various operations with my mill power feed without any variations. The rheostat function is very sensitive, with immediate reaction when rotating the switch knob. I will not hesitate to purchase or use another of these units when in need.
