Xfinity couldn't activate - probably not the fault of the modem
Honest Abe✓ Verified Purchase•August 9, 2023
I had to rate this modem in order to post my comments, so I have no user experience with this combo modem, so I gave it 5 stars all around.
I chose the Arris product because it uses less power and generates less heat than comparable Netgear and Motorola combo modems. I purchased two of these open box/refurbished combo modems, and had to return both of them. I don't think this was the fault of the modem combo, and probably, they were all functional. It's likely that the issue with these modems is that they had been previously activated with an ISP.
What I eventually learned was that in order to have a previously activated modem reactivated, it needs to be "released" from the account of the original user, and this can only be done by that account holder. Xfinity clearly knew this but never revealed this to me. After seven trips to the Xfinity store attempting to activate four different modems combos, I watched an Xfinity rep search a modem database by modem serial number when I went in to the Xfinity store to activate my brand new modem combo. That's when I learned that every modem activated by anyone appears in a database (shared among the various ISP's), which shows the ISP that originally activated this modem, and if it has been released by it's previous owner.
Perhaps Amazon doesn't know this. Several Xfinity reps (both in the store and on the phone) concealed this important fact from me, probably in attempt to rent me one for $15/ month. I finally bought a new modem combo (for quite a bit more money). Because it was new and had never been activated previously I was able to activate it without a hitch.
Here's another interesting fact I came across. In addition to the modem combos, I was unsuccessful in activating a modem that I had previously used with another Xfinity account. I was eventually told that in order to use this modem with another Xfinity account, it had to be released from the old Xfinity account in order to activate it on my new account.

Nice to have an all-in-one!

I purchased this to save the $16 a month my ISP was charging for the modem and router they supplied. Went with Arris as it was the brand the ISP used for their modems. Setup was easy and I did not need to contact their customer support so I can't comment there. I placed the ARRIS SURFboard SBG7600AC2 up higher and with less obstruction but the signal to my TV in an adjacent room doesn't seem as good as the old Netgear 1200 router was. At first the TV picture would randomly freeze for a split second, but after I tried a few different placements and angles it works ... OK.
Contact your ISP to setup

I will say the modem arrived as an open box item (tamper seals or stickers were missing) and it was shipped in original package, not an Amazon or plain box. However the modem looks brand new and works as advertised. We have a small home but the wifi range is adequate for sitting outside and staying connected. (I've been told the 5G setting/network on the modem is for greater distance outside the home, but haven't really tested it). Download speeds are much faster now (like A LOT). We've never had a connection drop yet. It meets all of our gaming and streaming needs. I've owned an Arris modem before and never had any issues. If you're like me, reading reviews and trying to decide, I would recommend this modem. We've had it 3 months and no issues. Time will tell, but my last Arris modem was still working after 5 years.
Worried about the PUMA chipset failure

I updated my system in 2020 with this modem/ router sbg-760-0ac2. It has worked quite well for us with a lot of devices attached, but we had slow internet in this area - no fast speeds avail. I recently was able to finally get faster speeds and had to completely reset this modem to try to ensure the fast speeds are working. It would not let me log in - I finally pressed "apply" vs. "login" when entering admin/password and finally it worked. In the meantime I had been searching for web advice and came across the PUMA CHIP problem in this device which causes failures in a few ways. So just keeping my fingers crossed this will continue to work well for me, and with the higher speed I have upgraded to with my provider.
Excellent product. Excellent value.

Works nicely with spectrum cable service in Florida where they replaced their Ariswith garbage. The software they provide to configure the unit is outstanding. You call up spectrum and tell them to activate it and they will. If you need all the bells and whistle, this is definitely the way to go. This particular unit is second to their best one. I would get the next step up next time. It's only a few more dollars. They claim it's faster. Although this is plenty fast. Oh, and outstanding customer service.
