I got this to mostly keep my hand/eye and general accuracy in check as I get older. It comes with two - black and red. Red is supposed to be the "advanced". For me, it was basic, but the black felt more fun because of something strange with the red's bungie. It kept hitting me in the forehead no matter how I had it looped. The black one didn't do this at all, and I suspect it's due to the "advanced" treatment, but it was more distracting than anything. The red ball had my arms sore after a 10 minute run with medium punching.
The balls are the same material as your regular Nerf ball, so I wouldn't worry too much about pain or your kids getting hurt, just watch your eyes, nose, mouth and groin. Eyes is probably the worst of it.
Key is to figure out how hard you need to punch the ball to keep control over where it goes left-right. Hit too soft and it'll put too much spin on it, causing it to go where you don't want it to go and break your rhythm, but not so hard that it shoots past you (or to you). Once you get a rhythm, try mixing it up. Double left jab, right straight, left straight, double right jab, repeat. Or do nothing but one arm punching. You can get creative with it.
EDIT: for a bit of an advanced challenge, try using this with resistance bands!

I've purchased probably 3 of these in the last couple of years. My son enjoys punching the ball and has gotten better at it with time. You have to be careful though because it can hit you, or someone near you and it's painful"¦.Keeps the boy entertained for a while!
Useful but more difficult than it looks like it'd be

Fits great and is an excellent tool to use in your workout, but it's more difficult than it looks like it will be. Is almost as much fun to watch someone use it as it is to use it yourself.
Recommend to everyone.

I really am not good at this device but I'm really glad I got it. It helped me discover that there is a weakness in my form, especially with my left jab, where I'm not punching with consistent enough power and good form to keep the ball on a good trajectory. I'm just not hitting well enough to create a straight line each time I strike after more than 3 or 4 strikes and that's a huge thing to realize. The lack of consistency is creating slack in the line which means the ball swings back instead of snapping back like its supposed to so I can hit it again.
I would recommend this to anyone at any level. After 20 years of training, I think this small investment is going to pay off very big to shore up where some of my body has gotten lazy.
I'm really looking forward to getting better at this. It's comfortable to wear, the balls are foam so they are comfortable to hit with a bare fist, and it comes with replacement strings. You can also log onto their YouTube page for ideas on training, apparently,I'll check that out next.
But yes, buy this, it's very good reaction drilling.
