Sp150 review along w/ others
James L.✓ Verified PurchaseMarch 2, 2024
The media could not be loaded. Hello Growers,

Purchased the SP-150 for a 27x27x63 Mars-hydro tent. The tent holds three five-gallon pots with a little wiggle room for humidifier, but I opted for three 3-gallon aerated pots. This leaves plenty of room for fans, a DIY co2 generator and the humidifier. Legal in my state for medical card holders.

Shortly after purchasing i received an email from the seller with tips for light distance during various stages and optimal temp/RH which was nice, but I'd assume anyone buying these items already knows this information, but I digress good information and appreciate the follow up.

I rarely leave feedback on items unless I'm thrilled with the device. I paid full price and was not provided a discount of any type for my opinions. MarsHydro lights are top shelf quality and this light although smaller than my last unit has better par and pfid measurements. I probably could have gotten the sp250, but my concern was size in the tent and would it be touching the mylar.

My plants are happier now than prior and I would recommend MarsHydro gear to anyone interested. Recently switched from an automated Grow device (grobo) which was less than advertised and really poor lighting. In a few weeks I'll make a YouTube video of this setup. In the meantime I pulled a couple of pics and some footage from the IP camera inside the Mars tent.

Items I purchased (from amazon)
Mars Hydro SP-150
Mars hydro tent (27x27x63)
5 x 3gallon aerated bags
A timer switch set for 18/6 (you can go 20/4 photo all the way to flower if you choose)
Massive bag of FoxFarms super soil (opted for soil, but next grow I may flip back to DWC or rDWc
4 small adjustable 6in fans that clip onto the side bars
Carbon filter with fan, switch w/ sensor and venting tube along with some ducting tape.
Full lineup of advanced nutrients including advanced feeding (not just the basic)

My only complaint which really isn't a complaint more so feedback would be the lack of an entry point near the bottom half of the tent for fresh air input. The tent has Velcro with mesh, but no intake hole other than the one used for power cables. The top has an easy outage for getting the heat out ect

The light itself is surprisingly cooler than expected. Upon unboxing I assumed the SP-150 would have put off a lot of heat, but truth be told the light merely raised the tents temps a few degrees. Having the fans setup on all four vertical poles at 1 foot intervals really helps push the air around and ultimately out of the tent. Even added a cheapo IP camera to monitor without opening (video uploaded). Two pots without plants had seeds added the day before and have already popped. The single plant with 5 nodes is only 2 weeks into grow, so it's really taking advantage of the strong light and optimal grow space!

All in all I'm happy so far with my purchase of about 2 weeks now. I fully recommend mars hydro products for all of your growing needs seed to smoke. I'm growing some top quality InHouse Genetics and some MephistoGentics. My next will be a few months from now, but 5th Element and some other InHouse seeds.

Bright lights for seed germination.

The light is bright and seeds respond. I have several grow lights. It's not the biggest but it's up there. It doesn't emit a great amount of heat, which is a plus. Expect to constantly be on watch for seed trays to dry out, which isn't a problem. It's just part of the system of keeping the right amount of light and humidity, without growing algae and mold. All in all, the light functions as any gardener would want.

I will say that when I first received the light, there were no (zero) hangers and the wrong directions. That was a bit off-putting. My other lights have hangers, directions, and are balanced over the trays. This one is slightly cockeyed. I hope the company has dealt with that glitch for other customers. Otherwise, it will take time to find metal hangers that work and for this gardener it meant a couple of weeks of trial and error. Plus the cost of the hangers.

But this is a situation probably due to the Covid virus and how companies are scrambling to meet demand while staffing shortages abound. Customer service, product quality, and product delivery go hand in hand. The quality of the M. H. light is up there. The delivery is what was lacking for this purchaser. Again, it could be a one off and everyone else has received hangers and directions. I'll never know. Give Mars Hydro a try and if there's something a miss contact the company and go that route.
Great value and great PAR distribution

I bought one, then bought two more (so far) - the light pattern on these is the most balanced I've found so far. All comparable lights are the same cost/watt.

My only complaint is that they could be easier to hang. There are 2 oval openings on each end (maybe 3cm wide) which I found narrow S-hooks I hang directly to the tent ceiling polls. (You could also loop the two S-hooks around a traditional adjustable hanging set but there is nothing on the light big enough to put a clip through directly.)

Heat-wise they're very good. Also very bright, don't look directly at it without UV sunglasses or you'll likely have semi-blurry vision for a few hours.

I've got three lights in a 5x5 daisy-chained to one control knob (you still need to plug all three in individually).

My first light was an SF-4000 which I was very happy with at first but ultimately on that one I realized the importance of the evenness of PAR and will stick with these for now. I can't speak to the higher-end lights out there and whether they're worth the extra money but this is definitely a great mid-range light.

You may also want to research Far Red lights that you setup to come on 15 min before normal lights and are on for 15 min after the lights go off which acts like a sunrise/sunset and wakes the plants up whereas supposedly without Far Red the first two hours the plant isn't really using the light but rather in the wakeup process - same thing at night, plants rebuild at night like people (and actually do the growing at night) but without Far Red they waste the first two hours of darkness. Those lights are cheap, use little power and only need to be on 30 minutes/day. You'd hate to think you're wasting 1/6th of your electricity and available time while plants wake up from total darkness to 100% intensity for 12 hours then back to total darkness.
- You might also try 13.5 hours of light in flower.

Between the first SF-4000, One of these lights (750 total watts) and one Far Red I got 1.5 GPW (trimmed and cured) on my first run - hoping for 2+ with 900 watts of even coverage on the next.
Nice light just a little low on PPFD
Dennis southerland✓ Verified PurchaseFebruary 6, 2024
I have a PPFD meter (not an app on my phone) and tested the light, its running on 122vac and 128 watts at time of test.
I was getting 380 to 400 PPFD at 18 inches. So, it was a little low than they had on Amazon, that is ok. I've used HPS lights for years and know well what they'll do. I just wanted a little light for the microgreens and clones. Also, after the light ran for 30 mins it was hot, LEDs burned my finger, I'm not sure how long this light well last. Too bad I can't dim it to 75 or 50%.
It feels and looks well-built but may need a small fan on the heat sink to last longer. I may add a small cpu fan to help keep it cool.
It's a nice light and I may get another one or a bigger light from them.
This Light is Awesome!

I got this light and wanted to use it for a couple of days before doing a review about what I thought and provide photos of my plants progress as well. I purchased the SP-150 for seedlings/early veg set up. To be honest kinda overkill for seedling but once those first true leaves come in, get them under this thing! Like others have said the bright white full spectrum that Mars uses on this light is much more pleasant to the eyes and I would imagine make it much easier to diagnose any issues you may come across in your garden. I wouldn't know yet as my plants are loving this light and have not experienced any issues so far (knock on wood). The first set of photos is 4 days after the plants had been under the light (set everything up and went on vacation forgetting to take photos before). The following photos after are every two days. I have only had my peppers under this light for 12 days now and am extremely surprised by their growth thus far. As far as the temperature, the light runs warm but I would not say hot. You can touch it and feel that it is giving off some heat but it is not as extreme as some other reviews I have come across would lead you to believe. I actually got this light to replace my previous setup that I will also include a picture of. That light was a 2' 2 bulb CFL. Although I had to increase the height on my new setup due to the Mars being so much more powerful, my temperatures dropped by 6-8 degrees immediately. This setup is not in a tent so you may have to deal with a little heat if you were enclosed, however my hygrometer never really reads over 5 degrees of my room temperature. All that being said, it's cooler than my old CFL Veg bulbs and way brighter 😎 I have used other reputable LED brands that are 10x more expensive than what I scooped up this light for with far less results. For the price and budget this thing is amazing! I am honestly considering getting the SP-250 to see how it would do in a 2x4 tent that I have. I know this thing can Veg but it would be interesting to see how it would handle flower. This lights penetration is surprisingly amazing and you can tell it could handle a canopy. I hope this review helps some and happy growing to all those it does ðŸ'
