Bought to Use for Emergency News

After looking at the features and reading many of the reviews I took a chance on purchasing this handy little 9 inch tv. For much less than $100 I feel like you get your money's worth. It has 2 antennas, a remote control, and both AC and DC power capability. Programming the channels was a little tricky to understand, but if you are a little on the techy side like me you will figure it out. It does Not pickup any tv channels right out of the box without scanning for them first. When I ran the auto channel scan feature it pulled in I think over 10 local channels. I wasn't able to receive all of the ones I wanted, but still enough for the Emergency coverage I would need. The antenna is always the limiting factor in getting the best reception on any tv. If your tv stations are not within about 5 miles of your receiving location you might struggle to pickup the tv signal with the supplied antennas. I was not expecting the internal battery to give me much run time since this tv draws almost 1 amp of power, but I have an external 8 ah battery supply that I built myself that can power it for about 6 hours. Bottom line for me, I want to be prepared to get current news reports when there is a power outage, storm, or whatever and I think this tv will fill that need for my family and me. And, the remote control is a nice additional feature too.

UPDATE 5 YEARS LATER - Fortunately there have been no emergency power outages where I've needed this tv. But I set it up and turned it on today and It still gets an excellent picture. I rescanned the channels and for the major metropolitan city where I live the tuner found 46 OTA (over the air) channels. With that said, the best reception for this tv depends on the type of antenna being used and the height where it's mounted. For my 46 channel scan I used an attic mounted directional antenna that's about 17 feet above ground level that is normally connected to my den tv.

I powered it with a 12 volt 35 ah battery that is part of a solar backup supply. I would hope to get around 20 hours of run time on a single charge. The included internal battery in this unit would only provide less than an hour of runtime.

Overall I'm pleased with this tv and continue to recommend it to others for use in emergency situations.
Works fine with the Terk HDTV antenna

***UPDATE #3***
I had this TV 4 years now and it has gone with me to Arizona, Atlanta, Connecticut, New York and Minnesota and the picture still looks as great as when I first purchased it !! Well after I got the replacement... Don't listen to the negatives, it's a great little TV. If you get a lemon just return it for a better model like I did. Whatever you do, don't loose the remote control !

**UPDATE #2**
I winded up returning my TV for a replacement before the 30 day warranty ran out. I got a little tired of the picture blanking out because of the faulty AC adapter. I received a brand new model which did not have those problems. The TV works fine now, but still I would not compare the picture quality to my bigger TV. Th pictures come in clear, but on some channels the faces on people look plasticky and very unatural. The screen color also changes depending on the angle of view. All in all after the exchange the TV is much more stable and I have not experienced any problems.

**UPDATE**
I received the Terk HDTV amplified Antenna today and all I can say is what a difference a couple of days make. First thing I did was to plug the antenna to the TV. At first I wasn't receiving any signals, so I made some adjustments. I moved the antenna closer to the window, then I did an "OK Scan" and pulled in about 27 channels ! My big TV with the Motorolla Booster and roof antenna could only pull in 23 channels.

I waited about 2-3 seconds and all the channels started coming in as sharp as cable. The loose AC cable is stil a problem, but not worth sending the unit back to the company. That would be an extra $14.95 in shipping charges. I guess I might have to make due with a little gaffer tape for now. All in all the TV works great.

The battery last about 2-3 hours and works just as good as the AC power cord. The Contrast is a little sharp but you can adjust that through the menu. One thing I had to buy a 12 foot extension Coaxil Cable so that the antenna could be placed by the window while leaving the TV on my night table. Another thing is that the Terk antenna is HUGE, it sort of defeats the purpose of having a portable TV, but all in all I'm happy. I'll have to give the whole set up a 4* instead of a 2* only because I can now pull in more channels.

Last year I dediced to dump my cable TV service. I was paying close to $1200 per year just to watch TV, mostly on the weekends. Every time that Cable bill came, so did another grey hair on my head. Luckilly my building offered a roof antenna so I plugged my TV to that, but could only pick up the local channels and a few others.

Some local channels like NBC and CBS were very weather dependent. I recently decided to get a Motorolla signal booster from Amazon after reading the reviews. This improved things quite a bit, not only did the booster pull in more channels the local channels came in as clear as they did on cable. Unfortunately the booster needed AC power so I decided to get this Supersonic TV for emergencies, or for those times I didn't feel like getting out of bed.

When the TV finally arrived, "CHEAP" was written all over it. This thing is made of plastic on top of plastic. I figured that since TV's have been in existence for more than 70 years it would be pretty much plug-and-play, but NO I still had to read the manual to set it up. When I pulled in the Menu the screen would blank out for no reason. I called Customer Service and they told me the person who is in charge of the unit was out to lunch and would be back in about an hour. I called an hour later and after waiting about 15 minutes on the phone I finally got to speak to a rep.

I explained to him my problem and he told me to send it back right away and get a replacement unit. After I got off the phone with this guy I found out that it was the AC cord that attaches to the TV that was loose and was causing the screen to blank out. Using some electrical tape I taped the cord to the unit which fixed the problem.

I then attached the antenna that came with the unit but got no signal. So I attached a set of rabbit ears that were lying around the house, but still no signal. I finally attached the coax cable to the roof antenna and that seemed to work ! I pulled in about 14 channels, 8 less than my regular TV. The picture was clear, but had that plasticky digital look and the sound was very weak, sounded almost like a toy, even though on the Box it says 'Stereo Sound' !

I might try another antenna maybe the Terk amplified antenna might work on this, but I only have 30 days to return the TV. In the meantime I will be looking for a name-brand portable TV, the Supersonic name had me fooled.
I'm getting about 22 channels in the room I currently have this TV, which is fine with me.

I'm getting rid of my household clutter so I will be using this TV in the rooms that I don't have other TV's just so the room isn't silent as I'm working. I'm glad I purchased this one. It's perfect for what I'm using it for.
Great Little TV

NOTE: The model I purchased with the "curved" base is the Supersonic 9" model SC499. I noticed some customers seem to be complaining that the TV they get is not as pictured. There is a Supersonic 9" model SC499C with a "circular" base also being sold by Amazon. From what I've read, the model SC499 is the better TV. Amazon has more than one add but is advertising both TVs as SC499C. You need to clear this up. Supersonic's website only shows SC499 with "curved"base. I had to search around Amazon until I found the add for the model I wanted.

Had it for about 6 weeks and so far, so good. TV works fine and picture is great. Perfect size for our bathroom; takes up very little space on the counter. Instructions that came with it are sketchy and not very helpful. If someone is not at least a little tech savvy, getting set up can be a bit problematic. Antenna that comes with the TV will only pick up a couple stations, and was difficult to attach to the TV as it had to be inserted through a very small opening making it nearly impossible to screw on to the television. We purchased a FlatWave Amplified Razor-Thin HDTV Indoor Antenna with 50-mile range for $59.00 from Walmart, and a quick-connect GQ BV-65 push on "F" adapter with a male/female connection for less than $2.00 from Fry's Electronics. You just screw on the female end of the adapter to the antenna cable, and then just push the male end onto the TV. We now get 22 stations. Waiting a little longer to make sure all continues to go well before buying another TV for second bathroom. But to date, very satisfied overall.
NICE little TV, and it's perfect for my use in my workshop.

I ordered this to replace the little RCA that I had that gave out after only 3 years. I use it at my workbench in the basement, with a coax input from my preamp that feeds the 3 other TV's in house from an outside antenna. I get a good signal, and this little TV seems to have a decent and sensitive tuner (unlike the RCA). I get all the stations and sub channels that my big TV's get (29 digital and 2 analogue) so no problems with it picking up. I was worried when I first hooked it up, with the little push-in adapter for the antenna lead - - it was barely picking up 4 channels. I took it out and just hooked my coax onto a gold push-on adapter that allowed it to go into the recessed connection and that did the trick. No problems at all now, so be aware that the little included adapter is pretty much useless - - apparently loses a lot of signal there. The picture is good and sharp and I had no trouble flipping through the menu and tweaking it a little. Attaching the base is not a problem if you have a magnetic screwdriver. Nice little set, all in all, and I hope it lasts longer that the RCA did. It was charged when I took it out of the box and stayed on about 45 minutes, so happy with that, too. I have amplified speakers hooked to the audio jack, so the sound is great. Good purchase, and I'm very happy with this unit. Since I am experienced in TV and antenna installation from way back, this set was no problem for me to set up and use, but were I a novice I suppose the included instructions would be useless, they are pretty bare bones. Knowing that the included antenna would be only used for strong local channels is also a given, so as long as you know to hook it to a good outdoor or amplified indoor antenna you won't be disappointed. All of these little battery TV's are pretty much the same in that respect, so keep that in mind. This one is really nice and worth the money, so I'm very happy with it and for my use it's perfect. Someday when I get time I'll explore the USB and cable input capabilities, but for right now I'm enjoying it keeping me company at my workbench.
