Intriquing story, great atmospheric location, fine acting all around, and above average music score.
A French Classic With The Perfect Title

Surprisingly dark and grim, this highly atmospheric French proto-noir film's title describes it perfectly. A soldier on the lam has a chance encounter with a young woman (and a stray dog) on a foggy night which changes their lives forever. A captivating cast of shady characters, a great cinematic setting, and gritty, violent, and symbolic storytelling make this an exemplary work of 1930's French poetic realism. From the director of the epic Children Of Paradise, this is quite different, but still showcases the stylish talent of Marcel Carné. One of the underappreciated, but very entertaining films of the 1930's. It is great to finally see some of them in such excellent condition. Also recommended: The classics Pepe Le Moko, Le Jour Se Leve,(hopefully these will be available in the future) Grand Illusion, all with Jean Gabin in signature roles, and early Jean Renoir such as La Chienne. This Kino Lorber classic release is well restored and looks great, especially for it's age, and contains some interviews and trailers. Highly recommended.
An Excellent Disc!

This is a beautiful transfer/restoration of an unjustly neglected film. The extras were also first rate! It will be a blu-ray that I revisit often!

It's rare for me to see a Carne film, plus Gabin & Morgan together
