Buy This . . .

I have an electric AC can opener and the hand can opener . . . I no longer use either.
This is the only one I use . . . it uses double AA batteries and cuts cans on the side so it is never jagged.
Just remove the paper on the cans and it opens it. If it was USB-C powered it would be perfect but for a Disaster Prep situation, you should also have AA and AAA batteries for the flashlight, etc. so it can also be used to power this can opener.
I repeat . . . buy this product. When it opens a can, your kids will notice that you have a smirk and not know why. It should not make you smile and yet it does.

A good alternative

Having purchased and returned three electric can openers (very recognizable name kitchen appliance name brands sold at large retailers) in the last year, I purchased this one from Amazon. The issue encountered with the name brand plug-ins was over time they would strip inside to where they would no longer rotate the can. I even tried the largest one that was available thinking it would be more robust.
My un-technical opinion is that plastic gears now used and larger heavy cans do not mix well. That's the beauty of this one--it sets on top of the can so there's no additional stress on the opener components whether you're opening a can of soup or large V8. Also, it's compact so, unlike the plug-ins, you can keep this in a drawer so you're not hauling out a can opener and plugging it in. As much as I like it, there are a couple of drawbacks, though. First, it's a little tricky at times getting the opener started correctly, but you will get the hang of it. Second, it's battery operated, which liberates you from the cord but also necessitates having fresh batteries ready when needed. I've found it an excellent replacement to the countertop and/or hand openers.

Nice and light and fits in a drawer.

Convenient unit, no sharp edges on the cans.
Works better than I expected

I don't open many cans but when I do, it's torture due to arthritic thumbs. I returned an electric can opener because I couldn't figure out how it worked. Seriously. I didn't expect much from this little gadget recommended by my physical therapist. I was amazed and delighted at how quickly and cleanly it sliced off the top of the can with no effort on my part. Definitely worth the purchase price.
perfect and compact!
