DoHonest Wireless Backup Camera System _ Model V29
Stephen M.✓ Verified Purchase•September 26, 2023
I purchased the DoHonest model V29 for a newly acquired Ford Transit Connect Cargo Van. It is a panel van (solid windowless side panels and no rear windows). Being a panel van, it is not equipped with a windshield mounted rear-view mirror. The wireless camera system takes the place of the rear-view mirror when driving.
Camera Installation _
Mounting the camera using its two-hole flat bracket eliminates drilling holes in the van body. The bracket is secured using the two top license plate fasteners. Camera adjustability is in the up/down vertical plane using a rotatable locking tooth mechanism. The camera power cable was routed up and through the exterior black plastic trim on the left rear door just above the license plate holder, into the door cavity, through the flexible cable conduit to the van body, up into the rear interior ceiling rib where it travels across and down to terminate at the van's rear auxiliary power point (also known as a 12-volt cigarette lighter socket). The V29 wireless camera antenna and feedline are 4 inches in length. The antenna and its cable are external to the van and sit securely on top of the plastic license plate holder. Camera signal strength indicated at the interior dash mounted monitor is a full five bars.
Monitor Installation _
Installing the 7-inch monitor at the dash panel or windshield can be accomplished using the included swivel bracket with suction cup base. I was able to securely place the monitor where the van's wireless accessory charger station is located. The Transit Connect is not wireless charger equipped but the charging station dash opening exists making it an ideal location for monitor mounting. Monitor power is supplied by the auxiliary power point in the vehicle shifter console.
Camera System Performance and Rear Viewing While Driving _
Displayed video on the monitor is sharp and bright. Adjusting the image using the monitor buttons is uncomplicated. Having the buttons located at the monitor backside gives the monitor face an uncluttered look. I have the backup guidelines switched off so as not to obstruct the displayed view while driving. As I mentioned previously, the wireless signal from camera to monitor is full strength and stable. This is surprising considering the transmitting antenna is externally located at the vehicle rear and the receiving antenna is internal at the dash mounted monitor which is surrounded by a steel body with only the driver door window, passenger door window and windshield glass to allow signal in.
There are only two drawbacks using this backup camera system for rear view monitoring while driving. The first is low video frame rate. Displayed video at the monitor appears to be 5 frames per second. 5 FPS gives the impression of what other reviewers describe as lag. Increasing the rate to 10 or 15 FPS would be a definite improvement in perceived real time motion when traveling at normal road speeds. Secondly, camera lens focal length. The V29 backup camera uses a very wide-angle lens that makes viewed subjects seem further away than they actually are. A vehicle following me that appears to be 50 feet away is actually only 25 feet or less.
As a backup camera system, the V29 does what it was designed to do and does it well. Hopefully in the near future there will be a new model addition to the DoHonest camera category specifically for rear-view monitoring while driving.

Warranty not honored

The media could not be loaded. I purchased they DoHonest back up camera and monitor on June 29, 2022 through Amazon. I installed it on my pick up truck and it worked perfectly until about a month ago. The monitor just had a bunch of crazy lines and faded background. I tried disconnecting it and reconnecting it but that didn't do anything. I checked the camera and all appear to be well there. I wrote to the company and sent them a photo of the screen and what it was doing. They wrote back and said the screen was obviously broken and that it had been physically damaged. As you can see from the photos attached it is not broken or damaged. In any way. At this point, I have sent them more photos but they have not
responded. It appears that they are not willing to honor their warranty. If they do respond and honor their warranty, I will update the review of this product but until then I would not recommend purchasing it.
Update!
The company responded to me after I sent additional photos and a video. They replaced the entire kit. Monitor, camera, cables and mounting bracket. It arrived today. I haven't hooked it up yet but I assume it will work because original one worked so well. It was easy to install initially and I am hoping that I can just plug the new monitor in and continue to use the old camera.
Based no them honoring the warranty I would recommend this system.

Met expectations

As the headline says this purchase met my expectations. My particular application for the backup cam and what I wanted and needed it for might be considered unique. It primarily involved trying to back my boat trailer down the boat ramp with a pickup that has had the standard box replaced with a flatbed. This does present some visibility issues that I have tolerated much too long. This installation solved the problem nicely. The positives of this installation is the camera is wireless so I was able to tap into my running lights since I wanted to be able to use it at times I wasn't in reverse. On the other end simply plug the monitor into the power port and it's done. Doing wiring hookups was really quick. The resolution of the monitor is very good and you get a nice sharp picture. The features of camera and monitor are very useful. The ability to add a second camera and then the ability to pick which camera or both on a split screen is great. I think the value recieved from this camera is very much in line with the purchase price.
About the company selling this item, they showed commit to their customer when I had to contact them with an issue of a blown fuse on the monitor power cord that somehow resulted in the cord not working after replacing the fuse. I called them and could not have been happier with their customer service. They took care of my problem by sending me a new cord and it was clear to me that my satisfaction was very important to them.
Bottom line is I definitely got what I paid for. Good value for the money.

Our small 25' RV has no rear window. The camera that's on top of the back faces mostly down -- not showing much. AND - it only works when stopped or in reverse. This is perfect -- allowing us to view what's behind us while driving. It sits up on the RV dashboard.
Frank and fearless review!

Let me start by telling you what attracted me to this product in particular. As you would be aware there are many reversing cameras from a number of manufacturers available online. What set this model apart, from my preferred options, was:
1. It had a larger than average (7") screen.
2. It was 1080p resolution, better than the average reversing cameras on the market.
3. Nice wide FOV of 150 degrees (more on this later).
4. Wireless installation
5. Potential for two camera support on the screen simultaneously, if required.
My package arrived in good condition (my first order did not arrive, so Amazon organised another shipment which did arrive - thank you!) Everything required for an installation, except for a few basic DIY tools were included in the box. I first tested the system according to the video suggested in the instructions. This was easy to put together and the system worked very well. After having used it for a day or two, these are some of my observations of the good, the bad and the ugly. There were really no bad issues and certainly no ugly issues to report. Mostly good, but some comments follow.
THE GOOD: The image on the screen was good and stable. I tested it to distances up to 16m between the camera and the monitor and the image was rock steady with the signal strength still showing all bars, so I would suspect that it would work over much greater distances. My testing was however over line-of-sight, so having a metal vehicle in between could have some effect. I felt confident that it would have no problem performing well on my Toyota HILUX. Also impressive was that, despite the FOV being very wide, at 150 degrees, there was NO noticeable (barrel) distortion in the images along the edges. This was MUCH better than I would have expected. This meant that vertical lines, poles, buildings etc were straight, even near the edges - great job! The dynamic range of the camera/display system was also pretty good meaning that details could be seen both in very bright and dark areas of the image at the same time. Reducing the contrast and increasing the brightness of the image helped in achieving this. Overall, a very satisfactory result. The display controls worked well and gave good adjustment ranges to the image (brightness, contrast etc). The mount had a feature I had not seen before. Not only had it the usual suction mechanism, but it was also very sticky. I found that it would stick to the windscreen (sorry, windshield for the rest of you!) without using the suction mechanism. I got the impression that using both, it would never fall off by itself.
THE BAD: nothing really bad to report. If I was to criticise anything, I would say that, while the image was quite good resolution (much better than most other reversing cameras out there), I was not totally convinced that it was as sharp as other 1080p devices that I had seen. However, and I cannot confirm this yet, but it MAY have been that the camera lens focus could have needed a little adjustment. I might experiment with this later. However, this was really nit picking! I am getting a second camera, so it will be interesting to compare the two. Colours were very good. The guide lines which are superimposed on the image have a lot of versatility in resizing them and moving them around etc.
THE UGLY: nothing I noticed.
Since the unit was new, I cannot comment on the reliability of the unit with time and under different environmental conditions etc. However, the remote camera and monitor did appear well build and the camera module did appear well sealed.
Overall, I would have no hesitation in recommending this unit. Its major selling points are much larger than average viewing screen and 1080p resolution. The fact that it can simultaneously support two cameras will also appeal to some users. I also really liked the no barrel distortion images. I didn't have an opportunity to test the night vision.
