This thing works great right out of the box. The order you hook stuff up hasn't seemed to matter. What I'd recommend is pressing the small "boost" button when you're ready to crank the engine. Battery was dead after our kids' games this morning, but hooked this bad boy up and we turned over just fine.
I have another model similar to this that I keep in the trunk of my motorcycle and it has saved me on a number of occasions! I just hook up to jump it via the trickle charger's cord which makes it even easier.
I've never bothered to use it as a battery to charge devices or needed the light feature. If I can get my car running then I'm happy.

With our cars and trucks parked during the quarantine period you need to keep checking on your your older models to make sure they still start. I had originally owned another product claiming to perform the same as this jump starter, but upon having a completely dead battery to the level that even the door locks would not open we used the previous battery pack jump starter and only got one start then it was requiring a recharge. This is dangerous situation if we had been traveling and could only get one start due to the battery being completely drained and having to require me to have that power supply hooked up for at least 20-30 minutes before I could attempt to start the vehicle. So using my time off I was able to perform a comparative study on these portable vehicle chargers and this model came in as my top pick for an 8L Gas or 6L Diesel Engine. We have a large transport truck that was built at the American General plant where the humvee was built and it needs a lot of starting cranking power. This unit was able to start the vehicle immediately and have plenty of charge remains.
