It does nothing! *Updated review*

I don't understand how this is supposed to work. We needed something to train our dog (we reward him for positive things, but for negative things ....) However, this does nothing. He isn't phased by it at all. My neighbors let me try it on their dog, and it didn't work either. Sure, its "easy to use" and has a "long battery life", but thats because it does nothing! Since I ordered during the pandemic, it understandably took forever to arrive (remind me why I pay an Amazon Prime membership?), so now having to order something else will also take a long time! Meanwhile, we try to use other methods to teach him not to bark or jump on strangers with commands, a clicker, and treats but; there has got to be a better solution!
*Update* Since struggling with getting this device to work on my dog, I have since noticed our Australian Shepherd mix pretty much ignores a lot of sounds which annoy other dogs. Is it his breed? His size? His personality? I am not quite sure. But, the seller has been fabulous to work with in reaching out to me, and I believe that type of service deserves to be recognized. Also, I wouldn't be in a hurry to discount how well this device works, as I believe smaller breeds might certainly be more keen to respond. Not sure if any other Aussie parents have troubles with their stubborn canine child.

NOT what I expected at all

So I purchased the Modus in the hopes that I can stop my small dog from barking non stop when anyone or anything can be seen in front of our home. Working from home means I am constantly having remote meetings and having my dog constantly barking in the background was causing problems.
So I got the Modus and my hope was that every time my dark starts barking and does not listen to my "No" command, that I would use it to get them to stop and then I would repeat this process.
The first time I used the Modus, I pointed it at her, said "No", and pressed the button for 1 second and my dog stopped immediately. I was very surprised and pleased. I then told my dog she did a good job and gave her a treat.
The next day, she started barking again, I pointed the device at her, said "No", and pressed the button for 1 second and she stopped barking again. I was loving this thing. I then told my dog she did a good job and gave her some love.
That's it. From that point on, I only had to point the device at my dog, say "No" and she stopped without me even pressing the button. She associates the word "No" and the pointing of the Modus for her to stop barking.
The only downside is that I may only ever use this device for a total of 2 seconds. lol
This device simply works and has helped me train my dog with just two instances of using it. Your dog may be more stubborn than mine so results will vary, but if you use it as a training device, associate the command to stop barking with the Modus, your dog will learn that barking is an unacceptable behavior.
My next goal is to have the Modus in my pocket and have my dog stop at my command of "No" without seeing the Modus at all. If she does not, I will press the button but keep the Modus hidden.
With that said, I do encourage my dog to bark when she hears sounds because it's a good warning for us. So I always check what she is barking at, I tell her "Good Girl" and then tell her "No". No more barking, she looks at me, stops barking, and I give her some love.
Simply amazing product.

I have a Shih Tzu and (what I think is a) Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix. These dogs bark at EVERYTHING and act like they don't know how to stop. Since I have been working from home they have been driving me crazy. They will hear a dog bark outside once and bark non-stop for 5 minutes. I finally took the plunge and bought this little gadget. It had great reviews and the price was decent. I kept the packaging thinking I could always send it back. It comes in a nice little box with batteries already inserted. The first time my dogs barked after I received it I yelled NO at them. Of course they kept at it...so I pressed the button for maybe 1-2 seconds and they both cocked their head but continued. So I said NO again and pressed it a bit longer (the longest you can press is 10 seconds). This time they both stopped. By that evening I could already see a change in my dogs. I ALWAYS say NO first and then press the button if they continue. After 3 days I hardly use the device at all. Only if they SEE a dog or cat run past our house do they continue to bark after I say NO. I think the key is having that one word that all family members use. Ours is NO. I loop the wrist strap through my belt loop and keep it nearby during the day. The house is more peaceful and I can now have Zoom meetings without worrying about the dogs. Great product that I wish I had bought sooner!
Works but scares my dog

Unfortunately, I am past the time when I can return this -- but it isn't the fault of the product. I have a rescue dog who was abused in the past, but who has been very responsive to praise, and she has come a long way. I actually didn't have to use this for barking (which is why I got it), as she had started responding quite well to me in response to praise. However, last night something got her going in the yard, and I could not get her attention, so I pulled this thing out -- to which she did not respond except to look at me, and then continue barking at whatever was in the bushes. When I got her inside, I praised her for coming, and figured I'd try to associate the sound with the treat she usually gets (aka, "charging" the sound, in clicker training jargon). She stopped in her tracks, away from the treat, and ran away from me. After coaxing she finally took the treat from me. I tried to make the association between the sound and a treat a couple more times, but the sound clearly terrified her (she cannot handle clicker training for the same reason -- I should have known!). Now I have to undo her terror again and get her to associate my commands with my praise and treats, without any extra sound that clearly scares her. So -- my advice: know your dog, and trust your knowledge. If your dog responds to clicker training, this will probably work well. If your dog has experienced past abuse, and has a past that you don't know about (where treats may have been used to lure her into hurtful situations), it may not work as well. I hope I can find someone who can use this device, as it isn't the right thing for my dog. Good luck!
Works as Expected

Received the "new" Modus Bark Control Device (we already had one of the "old" ones and are very happy with it) and immediately put it to the test on our neighbors, constantly yapping, dogs. This new Modus worked just like the old one. It effectively stopped the barking from about 30 feet away or so on these particular dogs. Effective range is supposed to be about 16 feet. I would say that is an average and probably a little conservative. Again, depending upon the dog and how sensitive their hearing is, it will work a little further than 16 feet (has been our experience). Obviously, the device does what it is supposed to do. With a dog that is sensitive to sound, it gets their attention just as soon as you press the "on" button. However, please note that your results may vary depending upon the sensitivity of the dog, not the performance of the device. For example, our dog is sensitive to it up to about 20 feet. When pressing the button, it simply gets her attention. Luckily, our neighbors yappy Scotties seem to be very sensitive to it and actually fearful. Of course that is because they are completely unbalance, untrained, and as a result, very insecure. From up to 30 or so feet away, they shut up and run from it (thank goodness). However, we tried it on a friends German Shepard, and he pretty much ignores it. You can tell it gets his attention immediately, but then he simply ignores it.
Again, great product. You will just have to experiment to see how effective it may be for your situation.
