Bought this for our first aid kit, so haven't used any of them. They look like they would be great to have on hand when we do need them, so I am happy with the packaging and the reviews.

If you can feel hard spherical pellets inside the pouch then you know it has not been activated. They are the calcium ammonium nitrate. In addition there is a bag of water within the pouch. This bag is opened by squeezing the pouch. You have to squeeze quite hard. I found it easiest to step on the pouch putting on progressively more weight until bag of water opens inside the pouch. You'll feel it give way when it does. Shake the pouch to activate all the nitrate.
After the cooling (endothermic reaction) is spent, 10 to 15 minutes, the pouch feels as if it is filled with only liquid, which it is.
I'm not using them for pain or injury but to cool my little dog down when he overheats. He can't pant off heat fast enough due to a collapsed trachea. It's gotten worse with age. I wrap the pouch in a wet kitchen towel and rub him down.
