It does require cooperation from the person being assisted.
Those with dementia may not be able on a given day to understand that their cooperation is needed, and caregivers who are short or have limited strength might not be able to pull the patient up using this and will need to revert to the more strenuous method of a one armed side lift.

Mom has arthritis throughout her body so it's almost impossible to help her without causing pain. My solution was to hold out my fist for her hold on. But still, it wasn't a good grip for her. I had a good feeling about this device which proved true. I tell her to scoot forward which makes it easier on her shoulders as she pulls herself to a standing position. This is better for the caregiver too, as you're not straining back muscles. Just stand w/feet shoulder length apart, back straight, slowly, smoothly, draw the device towards you.

This standing aid bar is practical and affordable. It protects the person who is doing the lifting. The person being assisted does not have to grab the arms or hands of the helper. It protects both people from injury or falling down. It provides that extra leverage needed. Have one in the living room and one in the car in case they are needed.
