Key features

  • Honeysuckle is one of the most widely cultivated ornamental plants in the United States. Gold Flame or Goldflame is an heirloom, profuse-blooming, non-invasive hybrid honeysuckle vine. Experts disagree on the origin However, is the most common id. We leave the experts to settle the question of hybrid vs select cultivar since either way, it is a well-loved, easy-care way to add color and nutrient-rich nectar across a wide range of climates.
  • Vines begin producing dense clusters of fat, tubular, coral-colored buds in mid-spring that expand to reveal a heart of sunset gold and pink-streaked petals. The bloom cycle continues sporadically through the summer and peaks again in the fall. Flowers are lightly scented at times, but lack the intense sweet fragrance of the more common species.
  • Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in full sun. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release fertilizer initially and repeat only as needed based on plant appearance. Prune after flowering to control size and shape. Avoid pruning during winter.
  • Indoor Growing: Crossvines require the full spectrum of bright, indirect light for 4 to 6 hours daily. Warm temperatures above 75 degrees, high humidity when actively growing, and period of above freezing chilling during dormancy to produce flowers. The vine can be grown indoors fairly easily, but producing flowers can be challenging.
  • Climate: Goldflame Honeysuckle Vine is moderately cold-tolerant and recommended for USDA Zones 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Generally well-established plants freeze to the ground and resprout in the Spring in Zones 5, 6, and 7. Elsewhere, it is generally evergreen. Plant early in the season, mulch heavily well ahead of the first frost, and protect from cold until well established.
