Steele Tongue Drum 11 notes 12 "
D. L. Norwood✓ Verified PurchaseSeptember 17, 2023
I have limited musical training consisting of sight reading & playing the treble cliff. In my older age I have wanted to take up a musical instrument that I could play immediately. I saw this instrument on YouTube with Doug Dailey which sold me on this instrument because it sounded so beautiful when he played it.
My purchase arrived quickly from Amazon & was carefully delivered by an Amazon driver & in perfect condition.
Now one thing that you have to understand is that in general mass produced steel tongue drums may sound slightly out of tune & can be tuned. I cannot see myself tuning mine. Mr. Dailey's drum was provided to him for a review so his instrument was in perfect tune or he had tuned it at the time of the video. After spending time on my instrument, I have deduced that the 7(B) is somewhat off tune. The good thing is that there are no dead tongues so all tongues ring out loud & make a joyful noise. I wish that the instrument would not echo so much when played. The tongues are large which makes them easy to strike for young hands. I am not as happy with the instrument's performance as I had hoped to be. I thought that the numbers on the instrument were easy to read in the daylight hours. The mallets were long enough for my small hands. There was a little song book included, but the numbers on the song sheets were small & hard for me to read as a senior. I had hoped that there would be more detailed instructions as to how to how to play this instrument rather than just where to strike the tongues.
If you are an adult & want free tutorials which give you free songs by the number, go to YouTube. I have used Simple Tank Drum, Soothing Kim Tongue Drum, Shelia Wilson, & It's Me Cello to collect free music that I have enjoyed playing. Some of these offer e-books which I cannot vouch for as I have not downloaded anything.
This instrument is okay for a beginner wanting to learn the basics. As you improve you will decide that 11 notes are not enough & will want to purchase a 13 note instrument to give you a wider range of songs to play. No I would not recommend this based on the sound.
Good, not great

Initial issues (because that's why you really read reviews). The handpan arrived quickly but the box was in poor condition and clearly opened before I received it. Interior package with sticks and cleaning cloth was also torn open so I suspect it was a returned item. The finish on the bottom (and to a lesser extent the top) was very uneven and damaged due being in contact with the cheap Chinese styrofoam. I tried cleaning gently but it didn't change. Also the styrofoam disintegrated on the edge of the pan and had to be scraped away. (See photos)
Otherwise, the pan seems to be in tune (which was my first concern when I saw the condition of packaging and that it appears to have been returned in the past). The sound is clean for the most part with a slight bit of chatter in the highest note (#8) because it takes a pretty good pop to get it to sound. The durability of the tuning is to be seen and I'll try to update later if I remember.
Overall though, knowing the cost of a great handpan can easily exceed 4 times the cost of this instrument, I'd say it's well worth the price. Even with the relatively minor cosmetic issues I'm still pleased with it overall.
I don't recall if the listing said it, but the pan did arrive with a soft, padded carrying case and a stand.
Take the time to buy one available through Prime so that it's easily returnable as I understand that arriving out of tune is not entirely uncommon.
Lastly, I purchased this as an initial attempt to see if the instrument was something I would enjoy. I had no misconception that I'd be performing with this pan and feel it's an excellent pricepoint knowing that a more costly upgrade would possibly come later.
i think it's ok but it was covered in a weird oily/sticky film
katja✓ Verified PurchaseSeptember 10, 2023
when it arrived, it was covered in a sticky black oily film that i had to really scrub off. we couldn't really touch it without sticking to it. the picture looks like it's shiney but it's very matte. i think it has decent tone - the highest note is kind of tight sounding and not very resonant, but the rest are pretty good. overall i think it'll be ok.
Overall great for the money - but get a different stand
Gelaine S✓ Verified PurchaseSeptember 6, 2023
When I first got it I thought the sustain wasn't that good. However we got a different stand and realized that the cloth that covers the bottom of the drum from the stand this comes with completely mutes the drum and really keeps it from it's potential. A different stand made a huge difference.
A few of the notes are slightly out of tune, but it still sounds great and is a fraction of the price. The highest note is somewhat harder to hit than the others.
Overall a great purchase. Someday I may get a name brand one at 5x the price, but this is great for now.

White is the perfect color to see in dim lighting,
"Mallett to Note." This drum has a soothing sound and pitch is good, not tinney sounding. I am Very happy with this Drum
