Wicked Kitchen's Tuscan Style White Bean Stew surprised me. It wasn't quite what I expected. Some things about the product, I like. A couple, not so much.
I like that the product is very spicy, unexpectedly so. I like spicy foods and the label of being a certain style of stew, "Tuscan Style", suggested so.
I also like that this stew is a compact mass of food. It seems to me that sometimes foods are somewhat "watered down". Not this stew. Adding some water gives it a consistency like typical Tuscan style white bean stew recipes that I found online.
This stew is filling, a big plus. At first, one might not think so, looking at the size of the product. However, it is relatively heavy and solidly packed with food. The stew itself, with its ingredients, is filling,
This white bean stew has some major positive nutritional attributes. It is vegan and non-GMO. The various ingredients indicate that it is a complete protein food product. A serving has a little more protein (15g) than two large eggs (12g). It has a good amount of fiber.
It is a stew that you can take with you, and it doesn't have to be refrigerated. It can be microwaved or heated up in a pan. Very convenient. It does have a fairly short shelf life.
Initially, I did have a problem with some beans exploding when microwaving the stew in its container while following directions and microwaving the stew with water added to it in a bowl. Lowering the power when microwaving helps solve this issue. It takes a little longer, though.
The biggest issue I have with this stew is the taste. I haven't eaten any type of food that I didn't like, except for one, a particular type of pickled food. I like bland to spicy foods, preferring spicy, though. I like beans of any type, and regularly cook them, pintos by themselves and also different multiple bean combinations. It may be just me, but I truly can't say that I really like the taste of this Tuscan style white bean stew. This is the first time I've eaten any food specifically labeled as "Tuscan". However, I do like Italian food and understand that Tuscan food is very similar. I think the tomato puree overpowers the beans and it may be possible that it tastes better freshly made, but doesn't make to change to a shelf-stable, microwaveable food very well.

A bit bland, but good.

Found this to be just a little bit bland, some other people were talking about how spicy it is, I found it neither spicy and in need of additional salt, which is surprising since the product itself already has 25% of your daily allotment of salt under the recommended daily limits. I elevated it some more with a squeeze of lime juice, a little bit of takin seasoning, and I added a quarter pound of shredded chicken. I get that that might turn some individuals who are using this as a vegan alternative off, but the chicken was well seasoned, and it allowed for a more flavorful and enjoyable experience.
The texture of this product, however, is very good. Generally speaking, I find pre-cooked bean products to be mushy and almost like mashed potatoes. This product was not like that, it had suitable an adequate tooth feel to the bite. The sauce was adequate, but I did have to add a little bit of water to the final product due to the fact that I added chicken. Overall, the product was good. As long as some additional condiments are added to it, but I don't think I would want to eat it on its own.
