I wanted sometime for power outages, something that I could store away nicely next to my battery case, and use only when needed to light up the house without using candles any more......this does the job. The power is enough to light up a room nicely.

This is not a very large lantern, but it puts out a lot of light. The price is reasonable.

These are my go-to lanterns. I've purchased many of them, some with other brand names/color but that are identical. I think they're all made by the same factory. I give them as gifts too and people love them. I keep a couple in the house and one in the car. We get frequent power outages here in PG&E land. These lanterns have been reliable and rugged. I use them as incredibly bright flashlights or work lights too, by removing the top shade. Just don't look right at them, it will hurt.
The dimmer works fine. Some have complained that as you hold down the button, they dim until their lowest brightness and then switch suddenly to brightest, so the dimmer is hard to use. In my experience it just takes a little practice, so it's not a big deal.
The most important thing is that these use 3 D cell batteries. Lanterns with internal rechargeable batteries that charge with USB can't come anywhere close in brightness and/or operating time between charges. The tradeoff is that these lanterns, with batteries installed, weigh about 2 pounds. So less great for backpacking.
Rechargeable D cells are rated for 10 Amp-hours, meaning they can deliver 10 amps for an hour. That's the highest capacity you can get in conventional batteries. I've previously tested these lanterns with rechargeable NiMH D cells and found they stay lit well over 24 hours on their brightest setting.
If you want a lantern that's always ready and will last a long time, these are the ticket. If you buy rechargeable D cells and a charger you won't have to buy more batteries. I have rechargeable NiMH D cells that are going on 8 years old and still recharge with no problems. They also hold their charge for a long time in the lantern, so they're always ready. The hook on the base is great too, you can hang them upside down and light up a whole room.

I do multiple camping trips per year and I've bought more camping lanterns, LED headlights, and rechargeable D and 18650 batteries than most people have teeth in their mouth, multiplied by like 4 or 5 times. I have a very bright 500 lumens lantern from about 10 years ago, which I use rechargeable D batteries in. I decided it's time to upgrade the batteries as well as the lanterns as the batteries were starting to show their age. So... I bought these three lanterns listed below. Here's what I'm seeing so far, using the same, new D rechargeable batteries in each (ie swapping the batteries). I have a lux meter device that measures light output. Unfortunately I can't find it, but when I do, I'll update this review with images.

Lumens is the total output of light from a device. Manufacturers make wild claims, with some outright making the numbers up. Lux is the actual measurement of light that hits or reaches a surface. For example, the sun might be 100 trillion lumens (I'm making up a number here to make a point). But, in the winter, only a small amount of this luminosity or lux actually hits the Earth's Northern hemisphere surface due to the angle of the sunlight because of the tilt of the Earth. The lumens is being spread across a larger area, like butter being scraped across a lot of bread.
As a result, we have a colder season, called winter, due to a lower amount of sunlight per square inch reaching us (in the Northern Hemisphere ) even though during the Northern Hemisphere winter, the Earth is actually closer to the sun than in the summer! In the Northern Hemisphere summer despite the Earth being further from the sun, more sunlight per square inch hits the Northern Hemisphere, thus it's warmer and we have more light (longer days, summer solstice etc), or more lux. The sun may be a huge lumens generator, but if you're on the dark side of the moon, you've got literally no lux. That's why lumens claims are pointless if manufacturers design their lanterns poorly, or are blatantly making things up. Lux is more important.

1. B08F3BXXNZ - StarLight LED Camping Lantern. This product claims 1,000 lumens, but it's only about half the brightness of my old 500 lumens lantern. I'd estimate the real lumens is 250-300 only.

2. B082HFFH98 - Consciot Ultra Bright LED Camping Lantern. This product advertises 1,000 lumens also, and is somewhat brighter than my old 500 lumens lantern. I'd estimate it to be around 750 lumens.

3. B082HD5JDH - LED Camping Lantern, Consciot Battery Powered Camping Lights. This lantern is very bright. It too claims 1,000 lumens. I concur this could be correct as it's significantly brighter than my old 500 lumens lantern. This product has the most lux, and will be the brightest.

As for longevity and battery life, I cannot say as I'm only about to go camping next week for an entire week and will test them out.

The image I posted of 4 lanterns shows the brightness from left to right, with left being the weakest/dimmest and right being the brightest. And yes, that's 4 boxes of Twinkies in the background. Told you I'm going camping next week.

If you look up item B015ZFKLNK, that's the old Amazon product number for the 500 lumens lantern I bought. The seller has now changed the product to something different by upgrading the product, but like many sellers, continue to use old irrelevant reviews. Sometimes they'll switch products to something else completely different, which is why some reviews doesn't match their products, leaving you scratching your head. But they do this to keep the high product ratings. That's why it's important to ignore old reviews and read them carefully.

Anyways, if you look at the reviews of that product, my review is the top rated one, with almost 600 likes. But that review is for the old product, not the new one.

Update early July, 2023:

I decided to return the super dim lanterns, B08F3BXXNZ - StarLight LED Camping Lantern. It would be a waste of time and energy for me to even bother bringing them along. The other two lanterns were bright as expected with B082HD5JDH coming out slightly brighter.

Be warned however, because of the brightness, it also uses up batteries fast at highest settings and you'll start noticing dimming within a few hours of use. For both better lanterns actually, at highest settings, you'll need to replace batteries each night, or switch to a lower setting.

Update July 14, 2023:

I bought new rechargeable EBL D sized batteries in 2016, and some Tenergy batteries in 2013. It's 2023. Both sets of batteries no longer charge, except for maybe about 10% of them. Last year, they still mostly all charged. Given the math of 10 years vs 7 years, clearly the Tenergy batteries lasted longer.

Having said that, I bought new EBL D rechargeable batteries because they were cheaper. Bad mistake. They didn't last 2+ hours on these lanterns before dimming. So, I was reading some reviews elsewhere for an EBL D size converter where it took one (1) AA battery into the shell of a D size part, allowing you to use an AA battery in a D slot. The reviews weren't good, but one mentioned item B081G5KSQ1, which allows three (3) AA batteries. I bought it to test, and here are the results.

Test criteria:

A random combination of three to eight (3-8) year old 6 AA 2,300 mAh rechargeable Energizer and 3 AA Panasonic Eneloop 2,100 mAh rechargeable batteries were used, in combination with item B081G5KSQ1 vs 6 brand spanking new D size rechargeable EBL batteries. All batteries were tested in two brand new 1,000 lumens lantern, item B082HD5JDH.

Results:

Initially, the D EBL batteries were slightly brighter. I swapped the batteries and that made no difference for the batteries, meaning the issue isn't related to the lantern. The effects followed the batteries around. After 2 hours, I started seeing dimming of the lantern with EBL batteries. After 4 hours, the EBL D sized battery powered lantern was even more significantly dimmer. See my pictures.

Verdict:

3-8 year old rechargeable Energizer and Panasonic AA batteries significantly beat out brand spanking new EBL rechargeable batteries.

In fact, I posted a video of 7 year old EBL batteries no longer charging. They were kept indoors and used a few times only almost every summer except for COVID in 2020. Will these new EBL batteries last? So far they can't even beat AA batteries. If your rechargeable D batteries aren't performing, you know what to do after reading my review.
