In many cases, like my house, gas lines for appliances just stick out of a hole in the wall or floor. This product provides an option to makes a clean connection point for appliances. It should be installed before the drywall (it's designed as new work). Also note that since it connects to black pipe for gas, that the size and shape of the box need to be taken into account when running the pipe that goes to it.
