Fragile

I love the wacky and cute design, but it doesn't go very far after winding up. It loses strength rapidly after traveling a few feet, after which it struggles to climb up objects. This is also rather fragile. After a few uses the wind-up leg loosened up from the axle so I couldn't wind the spring all the way anymore, and several of the feet fell off. So far my favorite one is the Zecar, which is a lot more durable.
A favorite gift.

I love these toys, but more importantly, my dad loves them!
I got this one for his birthday because it was one missing from his collection. Out of the 8 toys he has this is ranked lower than the rest because of the pull string. It's easier for the grandkids to use, but the string sometimes slips out of its little hoop and gets tangled.
I would still highly recommend these toys, but this one has a greater likelihood of malfunction and damage.

Super fun toy for both kids and adults

The best gift for kids! This toy is durable, sparky and fun for both kids and adults. I keep a couple of these on hand to use as last minute gifts and they are always popular. I highly recommend this and the other kikkerland wind up toys. These ones that spark are really fun though.
Durable little designs that inspire questions

Our boys saw these at a local kid's science museum, and they loved them. They don't get constant play, but both boys (8 and 13) had long talks about how each one moved and why. Every one of these has a different mechanism and method of locomotion, so they're fantastic for getting kids to think about those things. One looked at them in terms of robotics, and the other compared them to insects, topics both of them had recently been studying.
The toys look delicate, but for the most part, they are made with heavy gauge wire and stronger windup boxes than most toys. Our younger son literally ripped the box apart and sent his flying, but we couldn't see any damage, and it has worked fine for several months. Smart, rugged, bizarre designs are awesome for kids. Highly recommended!

The negative reviews are accurate.

Generally, I love these Kikkerland critters. But I'm afraid that the poor reviews for this product are accurate. There appear to be two problems.
First, the wind-up motor is not powerful enough to propel the Le Pinch across a flat surface, let alone climb over a small object. I tried a variety of surfaces to see if that was the problem, but the outcome was the same.
Second, the weight is such that the front set of "legs" merely spin trying to get traction, while the rear set effectively anchors it to the surface. If you are curious, and are lucky enough to live on the East Coast during the winter, you can simulate this effect by putting snow chains on the rear wheels of a front wheel drive car (tip: it's probably best if you try this with someone else's car, rather that your own).
