Great run, runs quite

I installed this unit in my garage to vent out excess heat during the night. It was about as easy to install as possible considering you have to cut a hole in the side of your house. Wiring the unit was simple. The three speed options is nice. I use the medium speed. I have it mounted directly below a bedroom on my garage wall and cannot hear it. Very quite.

I have the fan hooked up to a pair of these: Peco TF115-001 NEMA 4X Line Voltage Thermostat, Gray. One on the outside of the house and one on the inside. That way the fan only operates when the garage temperature is above a limit and the outside temperature is below a set limit. A simple control system but it works. I also wired a manual switch in parallel to run it whenever I want, like to evacuate fumes. It's a hardwired unit, no plug, so you'll have to run some nomex.

TO FIT IT IN BETWEEN 16 INCH ON CENTER STUDS, I HAD TO TRIM ABOUT 1/4 OF THE FLANGE FROM EACH SIDE! It was a piece of cake with an angle grinder.
This fan is a beast!!!

This fan is a beast!!! We installed this fan in June and turned it off in September, it ventilated our 3 story home perfectly. I highly recomend this size and product, it will save you a ton in air conditioning costs.
Excellent fan For 36x36 garage

Is it perfect? No it wobbles on low. Does it suck the crap out of the air. Oh hell yea it does! On high its hold your hat boys. Its suck the crap out and watch the dirt fly. We made a 2x6 extension to go around it and put a nice charcoal filter to go over it. It filters bad air when we use bad stuff and we use a regular filter when we want to suck out dust and cwap, Yes cwap. That way the fan itself will last longer. The wobble doesn't hurt a thing and you cant hear it. So no worries mate.! Geat purchase.
Shutter is nice. Good quality

Shutter is nice. Good quality. Speed selector switch is unsafe. The wires actually came out of the switch when I removed the cover. Its a press fit. No screws. Need to find a new switch or I will wire for single speed. Have not turned it on yet.

Update 5/11/2015-

I messed around some more with the provided switch and got it to work. I opted to not use the neutral connector on the switch. I simply tied in the neutral coming in to the neutral coming out of the fan. It works well. Fairly quiet. I am using it to vent a garage that is about 250 SF. High speed is just enough to provide decent air exchanges. Certainly glad I went with the 12 inch and not the 10 inch.
Best thing I ever put in the barn

I installed this fan in the gable end of my shop to provide extra ventilation when needed. Being a steel building, I ended up going to some extra work and fabrication to make the installation easier and up to my standards. Be aware that you will have some fabrication and flashing to do on any installation and that will be unique to your building and construction type. This installs much like a window, except that you have to apply flashing to the outside as necessary for your type of building. I ended up fabricating a shroud that surrounds the fan outlet for about 6" on the outside since it's installed on the wind side of the building, to help keep wind driven rain out. The unit is very well built and sealed, the flaps are weatherstripped on the bottoms and work well, but remember that the flaps are designed to open with a small air pressure difference, so it does not take a lot to open them in a storm. I would not install this over anything that is water sensitive just to be on the safe side. That is not a fault of the unit, this is just how all of these type of fans are.

Anyway, it vents very well and is rather quiet for the amount of air it moves. I get a strong negative pressure draft in the building and it's showing me all the air gaps and cracks in the other parts, which is handy since I'm also working on insulating and weatherstripping the building.

The only thing I did not like was the 2 speed switch setup. It's a goofy cheap pull-chain switch. I only wanted high speed, so I removed the switch and hardwired the motor. If you do the same, CHECK THE WIRING DIAGRAM BEFORE DOING THIS!!! The motor on mine was a dual winding motor, one hot wire for low, the other for high, never both at the same time. You could also use a 3 way switch to control low/high along with a second on/off switch since only on winding is used at any given time. I may even set mine up for this if I decided I need low speed later.

Overall, I think this unit is a bit overpriced, but it is a solid unit built to commercial standards and well worth the cost.

Update 1:
Been using this fan for about 5 months now and it continues to be one of the best things I installed in the shop. I use it often, and it makes a huge difference. No issues to report at all, I've even ran it for several days non-stop when I required constant ventilation.

Update 2:
9 months in and still working great. It pulls hard enough that the insulation on the side of the barn actually pulls in due to the small gaps in the metal siding, this is even with 3 roof vents open. I did finally wire this up to a 3-way switch to get lo/hi switching from the ground, and I'm happy I did. I use lo a lot more often than I thought I might. Forgot to mention before, I have only one of these venting a 6,000 square foot building with a 32' center peak, so it's big. You are not going to feel a draft off this thing, but it really moves the air. I have windows on the opposite side of the building I can open, and when I do, it pulls in air like you are in front of a regular box fan, and on the suction side, that's impressive. I do need to get up there and clean the blades, as with all fans they accumulate dust and dirt and that will eventually throw them off balance, which I'm starting to see. Just something to keep in mind when installing, you will need to access this from time to time.
