Water Distiller For Your Home
Jack R. UptonFebruary 1, 2017
Good, heavy water distiller. I have distilled my own water for over 20 years. I have gone through several different brands and models. This is my second Megahome distiller. This distiller has a stainless steel interior with a glass internal sprout. It distills a full gallon and you have to watch and not over fill the stainless steel container because it will overfill your glass pitcher. The only concern I have is the discoloration on the bottom of the stainless steel container....it looks like rust spots are starting to show where the heating elements are. Will a watch on it before the warranty runs out.
Expensive but it has paid for itself already.

I use it every day and I've owned this sucker for awhile. It is a bit pricey but worth every penny. For my use purposes it is perfect. I let it make water when I'm out and about and I'm the only one who drinks from it. However, this can only comfortably make water for 2 people and even then, you'll probably be running it 12 hours a day. I would recommend against this product for families of over 3, you will essentially be running it every waking hour and it is fairly loud.

Then again, if you are buying water from those 2.5 gallon bottles at the store, you will still save money and have to go shopping for water far less frequently with this, even if you are a larger family. If you are a homeowner though, I think an RO unit would make much more sense.

For me, this thing has already paid for itself and has saved me many trips of lugging gallons of water up 3 flights of stairs. I also don't feel guilty using those huge disposable plastic containers.
Does what it says

I like this distiller and would recommend buying it. The only flaw is the plastic cap on the pitcher. They were smart enough to make a glass insert in the spout so the hot water would not pick up chemicals from the plastic and then they went ahead and made a plastic cap for the pitcher. All during the distillation process, the water collecting in the pitcher is hot enough that steam rises up and collects on the plastic cap and then falls back down into the pitcher. The fix was simple. I went to a glass company and for about $5 I had them cut a 6"x6"x1/8" plate. I use that to cover the top of the pitcher while I am using the distiller. I still like this pitcher better (even with the flaw) because it has a wide mouth for easy cleaning if needed. Buying the glass didn't break the bank and it was an easy fix.

It makes a gallon in about 5 1/2 hours. I use a timer to shut the distiller off at 5 hours 20 minutes which leaves about 8 oz of water in the chamber. This 8 oz contains condensed impurities. Better to throw it out than to boil it further. It also makes cleaning easier. I had a distiller a while back, and the noise from the fan is a little quieter than the other one (but not by much).

I am able to distill water down to less than 0.2 ppm. I use a PWT (pure water tester) instead of a traditional TDS meter. The difference is that it is more precise in the lower ranges (0.0 - 99.9). Traditional TDS meters do not read in the tenths. Just a note that the end result does fluctuate up to 0.4 ppm, which I am assuming has to do with other variables (i.e., water, how clean the chamber is before use, etc.) Also, I filter my water with a zerowater pitcher before distilling (I do not use tap water in the distiller).

I am going to try a few experiments to see if I can distill down to 0.0 ppm. I'll let you know if I succeed.

I just thought I would repeat my response post to someone's question about adding minerals to the distilled water: (copy of post below)
This is no down-side to adding liquid minerals to the distilled water. I add vitamin-c, magnesium and calcium to mine. I am not a doctor; however, this notion that drinking distilled water leaches minerals from the body has just got to stop. You do not (repeat - do not) get enough minerals from regular water to supply nutrition to the body. If you were fasting and you drank distilled water, then your body would start to deplete itself since nothing is being consumed. Guess what, the same thing would happen if you fasted and drank regular water. Water just does not hold enough minerals to make a difference on a grand scale. As far as trace minerals, you should be getting those from consuming sea salt in your diet - not from water. I hope that clears things up. I'm not a doctor - only someone with common sense.
Great product. Hard to find distilled water

Great product. Hard to find distilled water. Went to Walmart few times, Walmart online showed in stock, but indeed got nothing from the local Walmart. I needed distilled water to make 50/50 coolant to top off my car. This has already saved me at least $50~$100 stealership cost. And also I don't have to purchase and replace my LG 6 Month / 300 Gallon filter which costs me $50 every 6 months. Time to get few big bottles to store the distilled water now.

The product itself is expensive, quality looks good. It should have a timer to control so that it doesn't need to depend on the thermal breaker to stop.

I was previously buying plastic gallons of distilled water at $1 a piece. I was horrified by how many plastic bottles I was accumulating.
This wasn't an easy purchase, Your return on investment will take about a year. It had been previously mentioned it will cost about .34 cents a gallon in electricity costs. So you figure .34 x 365 is $124, plus filters and cleaning supplies and the cost of the machine being $200, you're looking at around $350 vs $365 for plastic gallons. That being said, you are not drinking out of plastic, or having to to leave the house. This Megahome makes the cleanest water I have ever tasted. I have had no issues over the past few months using it daily. I have two small gripes.

#1. This thing burns deposits on the bottom of the distiller. This makes it extremely challenging to keep clean everyday. You want to get yourself a digital timer and set it for five hours. This will leave just enough water at the bottom to prevent that from happening.
#2. I dislike the carafe. i love that it's glass, but it leaks when pouring, so pour slow and steady.

I highly recommend this machine to anyone looking to improve their health and well being. It has provided me peace of mind about the quality of water I consume, and more energy to conquer my day.
